Erik ten Hag Reveals Why Harry Maguire Will Retain Manchester United Captaincy

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Harry Maguire will retain the captaincy for the 2022/23 season.

The England international was handed the armband by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2020

– just six months after joining the club on a record £80m deal from Leicester – following Ashley Young’s move to Inter.

After an impressive 2020/21 season and even better Euro 2020 campaign with England, Maguire looked to have finally silenced his doubters.

However, he came in for heavy criticism for his performances in Man Utd’s dreadful 2021/22 season in which they recorded their lowest ever points total in the Premier League era.

It was first floated last year that Maguire could have been stripped of the captaincy by interim boss Ralf Rangnick, but the German decided against such an idea.

Ten Hag was questioned about his plans for the armband on the club’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, and he revealed very briefly why the 29-year-old will continue as captain.

Ten hag:

Harry Maguire is the captain.”

“I have to get to know all the players, but he’s an established captain and he’s achieved a lot of success.”
