Mikel Merino Joins Arsenal: Arteta Strengthens Midfield with Spain International
Mikel Merino is the latest addition to the Emirates as Mikel Arteta bolsters Arsenal’s midfield. The 28-year-old Spain international has signed a long-term deal in north London, becoming the third major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna and David Raya on a permanent deal from Brentford.
Arsenal officially announced the signing of Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad on a long-term contract.
The 28-year-old midfielder will provide Arteta with another option in midfield, supporting Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard. Merino is a versatile player, capable of performing as both a 6 and an 8.
He led Europe’s top five leagues in duels won last season, with an impressive 326 victories, adding much-needed strength to Arsenal’s midfield.
“Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility,” said Arteta. “He has played at the top level for both club and country for several seasons now. Mikel will significantly strengthen our squad with his technical ability, strong character, and positive personality. As we all saw this summer, Mikel is also a winner, with his strong performances helping Spain win the Euros. We are delighted to welcome Mikel and his family to the club and can’t wait to start working with him.”
Merino’s departure is a tough one for Real Sociedad, who were reluctant to let the midfielder go. However, with only one year remaining on his contract and no agreement in sight, the Basque club decided to part ways. Merino made six appearances for La Roja during their 2024 European Championship run, scoring the decisive goal in extra time against hosts Germany in the quarterfinals.

Alongside his Euro 2024 success, Merino has achieved international honors at the youth level, winning the European Under-19 Championship in 2015 and 2019. He also lifted the UEFA Nations League trophy and secured domestic cups with Borussia Dortmund and Real Sociedad.
Merino is Arsenal’s third signing of the season, following the permanent acquisition of David Raya from Brentford and the addition of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori for a reported £35 million
