'My Job Is To Take The Decisions In The Best Interest Of The Team', Rangnick On Cristiano Ronaldo Reactions After Being Substituted

Manchester United interim coach Ralf Rangnick has opened up on Cristiano Ronaldo’s moody reaction to being hauled off in Manchester United’s 3-1 win at Brentford on Wednesday.

The Red Devil’s who won 3-1, were 2-0 up when the former Juventus forward was brought off with 20 minutes to go.

He was replaced in the 71st minute by club captain Harry Maguire and was visibly disappointed on the bench for the rest of the evening.

Rangnick indicated that his decision to substitute Ronaldo was driven in part by the experience of losing a two-goal lead late on at Aston Villa last Saturday, in a match the Portugal captain missed through injury.

Man United drew 2-2 at Villa Park, having been 2-0 up with 13 minutes to go,

and Rangnick was keen to avoid a similar late stumble in west London.

Ralf was asked about Ronaldo’s response in his post-match press conference.

“The only reaction I noticed is he was asking me ‘why me?’

and I said I had to take a decision in the interest of the team.”

“I didn’t expect him to hug me after being subbed, I know how goal-scoring players tick

“He was not happy but he came back from injury.

I was happy to have him on board for today’s game, especially after Edinson Cavani could not train.”

“I told him [Ronaldo] we were 2-0 up and we have to learn lessons from Villa Park.

After that game, I was angry with myself for not changing to a back five.

“Today was exactly the same situation and I did not want to make the same mistake again.

I said: ‘Listen Cristiano, you are 36 and in great shape, but when you are a head coach, you will see it through the glasses of a head coach.’

“My job is to take the decisions in the best interest of the team and the club and I hope he sees it the same way.”

Aston Villa drew with Man Utd, 2-2, at Villa Park in the Premier League as Villa’s new signings impressed.

Philippe Coutinho scored on his Aston Villa debut to complete a late comeback and earn Steven Gerrard’s side a point at home to Manchester United at Villa Park.

Second-half substitute Coutinho tapped home Jacob Ramsey’s square ball to equalise with eight minutes remaining.

A Bruno Fernandes double had given United a 2-0 lead midway through the second half.

Ramsey gave Villa hope before Coutinho struck late on.

The draw leaves Man Utd six points off the top four but steadies the ship for Villa who have been looking for results to match their performance.

Aston Villa vs Manchester United: Team News, H2H & Prediction

Aston Villa host Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Ralf Rangnick’s side is fresh from knocking Steven Gerrard’s men out of the FA Cup courtesy of a 1-0 victory.

But, they need to drastically improve their league form to keep up with the race for European qualification, having most recently been beaten at home by Wolves in the league.

They face a Villa side who have slightly faltered in recent weeks.

Losing their last three, but they can still hold their head up high following a generally brilliant start to Gerrard’s tenure at the club.

Aston Villa team news:

Steven Gerrard isn’t expected to alter his side too much from their defeat at Old Trafford last time out, but he will have to make do without the suspended John McGinn.

Elsewhere, Trezeguet and Bertrand Traore will once more be absent as they represent their respective nations at the African Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, Leon Bailey and Marvelous Nakamba remain sidelined with injury while Ashley Young represents a doubt for the hosts.

There could be a sensational debut to behold on Saturday evening,

as Philippe Coutinho may be afforded a taste of action in Villa colours while Lucas Digne looks set for a maiden start as well.

Manchester United team news:

Eric Bailly is the only United player away on international duty at the moment, although Rangnick will have a few absentees.

Paul Pogba remains out of contention through injury, as does Diogo Dalot.

Phil Jones, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo should all be back.

The visitors will certainly have to make do without Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay, who will be out of the fold through suspension.

Aston Villa vs Manchester United head to head record:

There have been 192 meetings between these two famous clubs, with the Red Devils predictably dominating the fixture.

Man United have won a whopping 102 fixtures between the two sides, while Villa have tasted victory just 50 times – there have been 40 draws.

The Villans have come out on top just once since the start of 2010.

And, despite Man Utd’s troublesome few years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, have lost to the Red Devils nine times in the previous 12 encounters since the beginning of the 2013/14 campaign.

Kourtney Hause’s header secured a famous win for Villa earlier in the Premier League season.

Although United resumed normality by beating Saturday’s hosts in the FA Cup in midweek.

Aston Villa vs Manchester United prediction:

Considering the two sides have just met and we’re not expecting wholesale changes by any means, this game should be straightforward to predict on paper.

With the home supporters behind them, however, Villa should be able to hurt United even more than they did at Old Trafford during the week.

The visitors are stacked in individual quality, though, and have the personnel to again flatter to deceive by picking up some sort of result.

While Rangqnick’s side is in massively underwhelming form, it’s a huge opportunity for Villa to achieve a historic double over United, but they might have to settle for a point here instead.

Prediction: Aston Villa 1-1 Manchester United

Lucas Digne Reveals What Convince Him To Join Aston Villa

Former Everton  left-back Lucas Digne has joined Aston Villa  on a deal worth up to £25m.

The Frenchman fell out of favour at Everton this season under manager Rafael Benitez, who said last week Digne had asked to leave the club.

Lucas Digne, who has signed on a four-and-a-half-year deal, said he did not expect his time at Everton “to end this way”.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard:

“When Lucas became available we jumped at the opportunity to bring him to the club.”

“To sign a player of his pedigree and quality in the January window is a great addition to our squad and his arrival excites me and everyone associated with Aston Villa.”

Meanwhile Digne said he had joined Villa because of Steven Gerrard:

“It was the main factor. I came here for the manager.”

“I had a very good meeting with him and we spoke a couple of times during this month. I feel his desire to win – the attacking football, the possession.

“I feel it’s what I want and what I want to show to the fans.”

Everton signed Digne from Barcelona in the summer of 2018 for £18m under former manager Marco Silva.

He went on to make 127 appearances for the Goodison Park club, scoring six goals.

Digne made 15 appearances for Everton this season but had not played for them since 1 December.

Several clubs registered their interest in the left-back, including Newcastle United, Chelsea and sides from Serie A,

but Villa were ultimately successful in securing his signature.

“What has happened and some things that was said about me in the last month has made me very sad,”

“But I will not enter a war on words with anyone.

“The club don’t deserve that, the fans don’t deserve that – and to be honest, I don’t feel that I deserve that.”

“Sometimes it only takes one person from outside to destroy a beautiful love affair.”

Lucas Digne is Villa’s second signing of the January transfer window.

The Midlands club having also brought in Brazil playmaker Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona.

Manchester United booked an FA Cup fourth-round meeting with Middlesbrough as Scott McTominay’s eighth-minute header proved enough to beat Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

McTominay was allowed to run unchallenged to the edge of the Villa six-yard box, where he met Fred‘s perfectly weighted cross to steer the ball past Emiliano Martinez.

The goal condemned Villa boss Steven Gerrard to an unhappy return to Manchester, where he was baited by the home supporters because of his allegiance to Liverpool.

However, the result was incredibly harsh on Gerrard and his team.

Twice in a matter of minutes early in the second period they had the ball in the United net, only for both to be ruled out.

The second was a straightforward offside goal against Danny Ings, albeit the flag was not raised until after Ollie Watkins had put the ball in the net.

However, the first was far more debatable and involved a lengthy wait for VAR to ask referee Michael Oliver to make final decision by consulting the screen and eventually ruling Jacob Ramsey was offside and impeded Edinson Cavani in the build-up.

Aston Villa Boss: Steven Gerrard Set To Miss Two Premier League Games After Positive Covid-19 Test

Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard will miss the next two Premier League games after testing positive for Covid-19.

Gerrard will miss Sunday’s Boxing Day game at home to Chelsea and Tuesday’s trip to Leeds.

It is the second time this season that Gerrard has been sidelined by Covid-19.

The 41-year-old was forced to isolate earlier this year during his time as Rangers manager, missing matches against Alashkert and Celtic.

Villa were forced to postpone their game against Burnley last Saturday because of an outbreak of the virus at the club.

Three Premier League games have already been called off on Sunday, with Liverpool’s home game against Leeds, Watford’s trip to Wolves and Burnley’s game against Everton falling foul of the virus.

The match against Chelsea at Villa Park is one of six Premier League games still scheduled to go ahead.

Gerrard spent three years as Rangers manager before moving to Villa on 11 November to succeed Dean Smith who was sacked after a run of five defeats.

Since then Villa have won four out of their six Premier League games, with the two defeats coming against Manchester City and his former club Liverpool.

A statement from the club said:

Aston Villa can confirm head coach Steven Gerrard will be unable to attend our next two Premier League matches with Chelsea and Leeds United as he will be isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.”

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard made a losing return to Anfield as Liverpool continued their pursuit of Premier League leaders Manchester City with a hard-earned victory.

Former Liverpool captain Gerrard was, predictably, given a rapturous reception after playing 710 games and scoring 186 goals for the club while winning the Champions League, FA Cup, Uefa Cup and League Cup.

Gerrard’s response to the adulation was low-key as his Villa side, who had won three of his first four games in charge since arriving from Rangers, set about making life difficult for Liverpool and frustrating the Kop.

Villa achieved their aim, aided by fine saves from keeper Emi Martinez, until they were finally undone in the 67th minute when Tyrone Mings bundled Mohamed Salah to the ground, the Egyptian scoring the spot-kick in emphatic fashion, the win leaving Liverpool in second place a point behind Manchester City.

Substitute Danny Ings almost took advantage of a late mix-up between Liverpool keeper Alisson and Joel Matip which left Villa fans demanding a penalty in vain, but Jurgen Klopp’s side closed out the win.

Aston Villa Have Appointed Steven Gerrard As Their New Manager

Aston Villa have appointed Steven Gerrard as manager on a three-and-a-half year deal, ending his three-year reign at Rangers.

The former Liverpool captain, 41, leaves the Scottish champions having guided them to a first league title in 10 years last season.

Gerrard replaces Dean Smith, who was sacked on Sunday after a run of five successive defeats.

Villa are 16th in the Premier League, two points above the relegation zone.

Gerrard took his first steps in senior management with Scottish Premiership side Rangers in 2018, and leaves with them four points clear of rivals Celtic at the top of the table.

Gerrard said:

“Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football and I am immensely proud to become its new head coach.”

“In my conversations with [co-owners] Nassef [Sawiris], Wes [Edens] and the rest of the board, it was apparent how ambitious their plans are for the club and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their aims.”

Steven and his backroom staff have ensured that the club is undoubtedly in a better place today than it was three-and-a-half years ago,” said Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson.

“We have shared a desire to move Rangers forward, to modernise our infrastructure and to make the club win again.

“There have been so many areas that we have moved forward, and there is still so much to be done.

But I can’t stress enough how important it has been to have with us a first-team manager who shared a drive and desire to set standards and move the whole football operation forward.”

Gerrard played 710 times for Liverpool, winning nine trophies, and spent a season at MLS side LA Galaxy in 2015 before retiring as a player the following year.

He coached at Liverpool’s youth academy before managing the under-18 team during the 2017-18 season.

Gerrard is England’s fourth-most capped player with 114 international appearances, in which he scored 21 goals.
