Morocco caused the latest shock at a World Cup that has been full of surprises by beating Belgium thanks to late goals by Abdelhamid Sabiri and Zakaria Aboukhlal.

Belgium keeper Thibaut Courtois was at fault for the first goal, inexplicably allowing Sabiri’s inswinging free-kick to beat him at his near post with 17 minutes to go.

But the whole Belgium side paid the price for a ponderous performance, with Morocco capping a magnificent second-half display when Aboukhlal fired Hakim Ziyech’s cutback into the roof of the net in stoppage time.

Belgium vs Morocco XI: Team News, Possible Lineup

Belgium continue their pursuit of a first World Cup on Sunday, when they meet Group F rivals Morocco at Al Thumama Stadium.

Romelu Lukaku is on target when Belgium name their team to face Morocco at the World Cup today.

The striker, who is his country’s all-time top goalscorer, missed the opening win over

Canada with a thigh injury, and has played just 29 minutes of competitive football since August.

Roberto Martinez confirmed that Lukaku is not far away from being available, but the Morocco clash is likely to come too soon.

“Today Romelu trained with the rest of the group,” Martinez said on Thursday.

“It was a control session, now we’ll see how his body reacts now afterwards.

“I don’t think he’ll be ready to start the match against Morocco, but we’ll find out in the next two days.”

Martinez might be tempted to shuffle his pack after the poor display against Canada,

with Thomas Meunier a likely candiate to come in for Yannick Carrasco.

Amadou Onana is also pushing for a place in the starting lineup.

Morocco:  are sweating on the fitness of Bayern Munich left-back Noussair Mazraoui after he

was forced off against Croatia with a hip injury, having landed awkwardly.

He’s a serious doubt as a result and should he miss out then it will likely be Yahya Attiat-Allah who comes into the side.

Abdessamad Ezzalzoul has a hamstring injury and is expected to miss out, but apart from that

there are no real concerns for Morocco as they look for another positive result having held Croatia to a draw.

Hakim Ziyech had a number of bright moments in that match, particularly in the first-half,

and Morocco will rely on the Chelsea winger to cause an ageing Belgium backline problems.

Michy Batshuayi hands Belgium a hard-fought 1-0 win over Canada in their World Cup opener in Qatar.

The result means the Red Devils move top of Group F with Croatia and Morocco both tied on one point – following their 0-0 draw earlier on Wednesday – after the opening round of matches.

Canada’s pace caused Belgium’s aging backline a wealth of problems and they had the chance

to take the lead in the 13th minute from the penalty spot after a Yannick Carrasco handball at a corner.

Alphonso Davies stepped up but his poor shot was denied by Thibaut Courtois who dived low to his right to make the stop.

Canada continued to pressure and had a penalty shout reviewed by VAR in the 39th

minute when Richie Laryea went down in the area under a challenge from Axel Witsel, but it was deemed to not be a penalty.

Two minutes before half time and Belgium took the lead against the run if play through Batshuayi.

He latched onto a hopeful long ball by Toby Alderweireld and slotted his shot into the bottom corner.

The second half was a scrappy affair with Belgium keen to disrupt Canada’s rapid attack at any opportunity.

Canada had plenty of shots on goal but lacked cutting edge.

Their best opportunity to equalise came in the 49th minute when Jonathan David nodded a free header over the bar.

Substitute Cyle Larin also had a good chance to levelwith ten minutes of normal time left, but his header was caught by Courtois.

Belgium vs Canada XI: Team News Possible Lineup

Romelu Lukaku is a doubt as Belgium get their World Cup campaign underway against Canada on Wednesday.

The Chelsea loaned striker played just 29 minutes for Inter Milan since August and he

continues to battle a thigh injury, which is likely to keep him out of his country’s first two Group F matches.

Michy Batshuayi is another options to get the nod to lead the line, with the pressure on Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard behind him to

deliver as Belgium finally look to live up to their potential on the biggest stage.

Thomas Meunier came off the bench in a friendly against Egypt last week as he continues his recovery from injury and that

could be enough for him to start, with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are familiar names likely to once again start in the back three.

There is a decision for Roberto Martinez to make at left wing-back, with Yannick Carrasco

and Timothy Castagne pushing to earn their place in the starting lineup.

Canada have concerns over star man Alphonso Davies as they make their World Cup return,

even if the Bayern Munich left-back has declared he is “ready to start”.

Davies picked up a hamstring injury while playing for his club and is yet to fully recover,

not playing in either of the pre-tournament friendlies.

It remains to be seen whether Canada risk him or decide to save him for matches that, on paper at least, appear more favourable.

Lille’s Jonathan David will be crucial up front, with nine goals already in Ligue 1 this season.

He certainly has the ability to trouble that Belgium backline.

Predicted Belgium XI (3-4-3):

Courtois;

Debast, Alderweireld, Vertonghen;

Meunier, Tielemans, Witsel, Carrasco;

De Bruyne, Hazard, Batshuayi;

Predicted Canada XI (3-4-3):

Borjan;

Johnston, Vitoria, Miller;

Laryea, Hutchinson, Eustaquio, Adekugbe;

Buchanan, David, Larin

Kevin De Bruyne scored one and set up another but Belgium were forced to hold off the fast-finishing Wales in the second half of their Nations League clash in Brussels.

Wales began the game well but after shaking off early lethargy Belgium dominated the final half-hour of the opening half following De Bruyne’s measured left-footed volley from Michy Batshuayi’s centre.

The roles were reversed later in the half when De Bruyne produced a perfect cross for Romelu Lukaku’s replacement to tap home.

De Bruyne could have scored two more in the first half as he hit the post and saw an effort just kicked wide by Wayne Hennessey.

Kieffer Moore got Wales back into the game in the second half with a powerful header from Brennan Johnson’s cross and Wales pushed for the equaliser as the half wore on, especially after Gareth Bale’s introduction in the 64th minute.

The win sees Belgium stay in second spot in League A: Group 4, three points behind Netherlands, with Wales propping up the table with a solitary point.

Belgium can still top the group if they win by two goals at the Johan Cruijff Arena on Sunday.

Belgium vs Wales: Team News, H2H, Prediction

Wales to face Belgium for a UEFA Nations League double-header that also includes the visit of Poland to Cardiff.

Rob Page is gearing up to lead his country to their first World Cup since 1958 and, naturally, all of the focus will be on Qatar.

Still, the fact Wales sit bottom of their group will be a concern.

While Welsh football has largely been one big success story in recent years, relegation from Group A4 would be hugely disappointing.

For Belgium, this World Cup seems like one too far for their much-heralded golden generation in terms of genuine expectations to win it. They do, however, still boast a huge amount of quality.

Harry Wilson, Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey are also likely to miss out, although all will play major roles at the World Cup.

For Belgium, Romelu Lukaku is missing through injury.

'Uefa Care About Money Not Players' Says Thibaut Courtois

Former Chelsea goalkeeper has accused football governing bodies of prioritising money over the welfare of players, who he feels are being treated like “robots”.

The Belgians international played in both of his countries Nations League games during the current international break.

This includes Sunday’s third-place playoff with Italy, which sparked the 29-year-old’s criticism.

He revealed to Sky Sports:

“This game is just a money game, we have to be honest about it.”

“We just play it because for Uefa it is extra money and it is an extra game on TV.

“OK, for us it’s a good game because it’s against Italy and for Italy it’s a good game because it’s against Belgium.

But look how much both teams changed their players.

If we had both been in the final there would have been others playing.”

Forwards Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku were two of the absentees for Sunday’s game – which Italy won 2-1 – with players suffering from muscular problems after featuring in the semi-final loss to France three days earlier.

Courtois added:

“This just shows that we play too many games.”

“Next year we have a World Cup in November.

We may be have to play until the latter stages of June again.

We will get injured and nobody cares about the players anymore.

“After a long season we will have to play four games in the Nations League again.

 We will have two weeks’ holiday and that’s not enough for players to be able to continue playing 12 months at the highest level.

“If we never say anything it will always be the same.

They (Uefa) can be angry about other teams making a Super League but they don’t care about the players, they just care about their pockets.”

World governing body Fifa is proposing further changes to the football calendar that would see a World Cup played every two years instead of the current four.

Courtois added:

“You hear that they want to put a European Championships and a World Cup every year,”

“When will we get a rest? Never.

“So in the end top players will get injured all the time and that’s the end of it.

It’s something that should be much better and better taken care of. We’re not robots.”

Uefa were unavailable for comment when contacted by the BBC.

England Move Up To Third In Men's World Rankings

England are up to third in Fifa’s men’s world rankings, equalling their highest ever position.

Following their defeat by Italy in the Euro 2020 final in July, England beat Hungary and Andorra 4-0 in World Cup qualifying earlier this month before drawing with Poland.

Gareth Southgate’s men move above world champions France, who drop to fourth after two draws and a win.

The last time England were ranked third was in September 2012.

Scotland, who lost in Denmark before beating Moldova and Austria, rise four places to 45th.

Northern Ireland are also up four spots, wins over Lithuania and Estonia and a draw with Switzerland lifting them to 47th.

The Republic of Ireland have fallen from 47th to 50th after defeat by Portugal and draws with Azerbaijan and Serbia.
