Australia reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in 16 years after shocking Denmark.

The Danes, needing victory to progress, dominated possession but were caught out on the break when Australia scored the winner on the hour mark.

Denmark lost the ball in the Australian box and Mathew Leckie finished a brilliant counter attack with a low shot past Kasper Schmeichel.

Kylian Mbappe scored twice for France as the defending champions laid down a marker by beating Denmark to become the first team into the World Cup knockout stage.

The 23-year-old forward, France’s youngest scorer in the competition, stole the show once again with second-half strikes to take his side through.

Mbappe had earlier blazed over from 12 yards and forced Kasper Schmeichel into a save with a rising shot.

But the Paris St-Germain star broke the deadlock just past the hour mark, exchanging a fine one-two with Theo Hernandez before stroking in.

Denmark equalised just seven minutes later with their first effort on target as defender Andreas Christensen headed home at the far post after France failed to clear a corner.

Christensen, though, may have counted himself lucky to still be on the pitch at that point after receiving only a yellow card on 20 minutes for dragging back Mbappe, who was looking to run clear.

France keeper Hugo Lloris made a sharp stop to keep out Tottenham team-mate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s first-time shot while Martin Braithwaite agonisingly fired into the side netting.

But with four minutes left, Mbappe had the final say, sneaking in at the far post to convert Antoine Griezmann’s cross.

France vs Denmark: Team News Possible Lineup

France can seal a place in the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup when they resume Group D duties against Denmark at Stadium 974 this  evening.

France will be without Lucas Hernandez when they face Denmark in their second World Cup clash on Saturday.

The left-back ruptured his ACL in the opening win over Australia and will miss the rest of the tournament,

Theo Hernandez his brother will come into the starting lineup as France look to take a huge step towards sealing top spot in Group D.

The front four is likely to be the same against Denmark, with Kylian Mbappe getting a goal

and an assist against Australia and Olivier Giroud netting a brace.

Les Blues showed no signs of missing Karim Benzema, who was ruled out of the World Cup with a thigh injury.

There is a decision for Didier Deschamps to make in defence, with William Saliba and

Raphael Varane among the potential centre-back options, but Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano are the favourites to keep their places in the side.

As for Denmark, midfielder Thomas Delaney will play no further part in the tournament,

the knee injury he suffered against Tunisia serious enough to end his World Cup.

Brentford’s Mathias Jensen is a potential option to replace him, while Kasper Hjulmand could

opt to move to a back four, the system Denmark used when beating France in the Nations League in September.

The back-five lineup against Tunisia offered very little in attack, so Mikkel Damsgaard could come into the side and add a bit more attacking impetus.

Predicted France XI (4-2-3-1):

Lloris;

Pavard, Konate, Upamecano, T Hernandez;

Tchouameni, Rabiot;

Dembele, Griezmann, Mbappe;

Giroud

Predicted Denmark XI (4-3-3):

Schmeichel;

Kristensen, Andersen, Christensen, Maehle;

Hojbjerg, Jensen, Eriksen;

Damsgaard, Olsen, Dolberg
