Kalidou Koulibaly’s superb volley earned Senegal a place in the World Cup knock-out stages for just the second time as they beat Ecuador 2-1.

All three goals came from players based in England as Ecuador’s Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo cancelled out a penalty by

Watford’s Ismaila Sarr before Chelsea defender Koulibaly’s side-footer won it.

Ecuador needed just a point to progress but paid the price for a passive display as Senegal were spurred on by an almost non-stop

cacophony of drumming from their supporters in Al Rayyan.

Watford winger Sarr coolly stroked home from the spot, after being clumsily upended by Ecuador defender Piero Hincapie, to put the African champions deservedly ahead.

Ecuador levelled with their first real chance as Caicedo swept home Felix Torres‘ flick-on but

Koulibaly’s composed finish immediately regained the lead for Senegal, who knew only victory would be enough to go through barring an unlikely Qatar upset against the Netherlands.

They held out amid a nervy six minutes of stoppage time to finish as runners-up in Group A behind the Dutch, who clinched top spot by handing the tournament hosts a third defeat in three games with a comfortable 2-0 win in Al Khor.

Aliou Cisse‘s side are potential last-16 opponents for England given the Lions of Teranga will next face the winners of Group B – a berth Gareth Southgate‘s team could seal later on Tuesday.

2022 World Cup hosts Qatar are eliminated as The Netherlands draw 1-1 with Ecuador at the Khalifa International Stadium, in Al Rayyan.

Cody Gakpo got the Dutch off to the perfect start with a goal after just six minutes.

A despairing Ecuadorian back-pass came to Davy Klaassen.

The Ajax midfielder delayed his pass as Gakpo raced into a gap on the edge of the box.

Gakpo took the pass and slapped his left-footed shot into the top corner.

Five minutes after the break, Ecuador got their equaliser.

Enner Valencia pounced after Andries Noppert could only parry Pervis Estupinan’s low shot.

The Dutch looked ragged, but managed to weather the storm and hold on for a point which may yet be crucial.

Netherlands vs Ecuador XI: Team News Possible Lineup

Louis van Gaal has a big decision to make over Memphis Depay when Netherlands take on Ecuador in their second game at the World Cup.

Both sides won their opening matches in Qatar, meaning victory in Doha could guarantee progression to the last-16 and likely as Group A winners.

The Dutch left it late to down Senegal on the weekend with Cody Gakpo due to stay in the starting XI after netting the winner, but Steven Bergwijn and Vincent Janssen may not keep their spot.

Barcelona striker Depay had not played since mid-September before coming off the bench against the African champions,

due to a hamstring injury. It remains to be seen whether that cameo was enough to earn him a start.

Denzel Dumfries was fit to play in the opener and should continue in the 3-4-1-2 formation chosen by Van Gaal.

As for Ecuador, two-goal hero Enner Valencia picked up a knock to his knee in the win over Qatar.

He stated afterwards:

“The doctors will assess me, but I hope to play in the second game against Holland.”

The South Americans, on a run of seven-straight games without conceding, are set to be unchanged if Valencia is fit.

Predicted Netherlands XI:

Noppert;

De Ligt, Van Dijk, Ake;

Dumfries, De Jong, Berghuis, Blind;

Gakpo; Bergwijn, Depay.

Predicted Ecuador XI:

Galindez;

Preciado, Torres, Hincapie, Estupinan;

Plata, Mendez, Caicedo, Ibarra;

Valencia, Estrada.

 Qatar became the first hosts to lose their opening game of the tournament, falling 2-0 to Ecuador at the Al Bayt Stadium.

A brace from Enner Valencia was enough to start the South Americans’ campaign perfectly,

as they ran out comfortable winners in a dominant display.

Despite the partisan atmosphere, the Ecuadorians were calmness personified in possession, dictating the tempo under next-to-no pressure from the Qataris.

Brighton and Hove Albion duo Moises Caicedo and Pervis Estupinan offered thrust and guile in the engine room and down the left respectively

as Gustavo Alfaro’s side threatened to rack up a cricket score, but they kept the scoring down as they eased down to preserve themselves for tougher fixtures ahead.

For Felix Sanchez’s Qatar, it is – and they got off to – the worst possible start.

Valencia thought he had opened the tournament’s scoring inside three minutes,

nodding in from close range after a penalty box melee from an Estupinan free-kick, but VAR mysteriously disallowed the strike on the grounds of a very dubious offside.

On 16 minutes, however, the Ecuadorians got justice, as nervy home goalkeeper Saad Al-Sheeb felled the onrushing Valencia, conceding a penalty.

The former West Ham and Everton striker converted confidently, and he doubled his side’s lead just after the half-hour,

as he glanced a header into the far corner from an Angelo Preciado cross to put the game beyond the hosts.
