Christian Pulisic scored a first-half winner and injured himself in the process as the United States earned a 1-0 win over Iran to reach the last 16 of the World Cup.

The Chelsea forward fired home from close range in the 38th minute but a heavy collision with goalkeeper Ali Beiranvand left him limping

Iran scored two goals deep into added time to stun Wales at the World Cup.

Substitute Roozbeh Cheshmi struck from 20 yards nine minutes into stoppage time,

before Ramin Rezaeian finished off a counter-attack to seal victory for a revitalised Iran side,

who have renewed hope of reaching the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

Those were decisive blows to Welsh prospects of victory, which had all but vanished when

goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was sent off with four minutes of normal time remaining,

following a video assistant referee check, for a reckless challenge on Medhi Taremi.

As they did in their opening draw with the United States, Wales started poorly and had the video assistant referee (VAR) to thank for disallowing a goal from Iran’s Ali Gholizadeh for offside.

Wales vs Iran XI: Team News, Possible Lineup

Wales midfielder Joe Allen is fit again and will be part of the squad as his country face Iran in a crucial World Cup group game on Friday.

Allen was ruled out of Monday’s opener against USA, which saw a late Gareth Bale penalty earn a 1-1 draw, but Rob Page has confirmed he is ready to be involved again.

Page:

“The medical team have been exceptional and they’re the reason he’s now fit.”

“We were all concerned about him, the way he kept breaking down.

He’s had to meet targets along the way, he’s met every one.

If we’d played him in game one and he’d broken down he would have been completely out.

“We could have pushed him for USA, but due to the confidence we have to get out of the group I want him for the long-term.”

Further forward, striker Kieffer Moore is expected to start after being left on the bench

for the first half against the Americans, which coincided with a vastly-improved second-half performance.

Team-mate Harry Wilson told reporters on Wednesday:

“The game was perfect for Kieffer to come on at half-time. He gave us that platform to build and play off him.

“The next game may be perfect for DJ (Daniel James) or Brennan (Johnson). We’re lucky with the forwards we have.

“I’d say this is a must-win game now after starting off with a solid point.

Now we’ve got that point on the board, we’re going into Friday’s game to get the win.

Hopefully we do that and then focus on the England game.”

Wales must get a result against Iran before facing England next week as they look to get out of the group stage in their first World Cup in 64 years.

Wales predicted XI:

Mepham, Rodon, Davies;

Iran predicted XI:

England start their World Cup with a fine form as they thrash Iran by 6-2 thanks to Jude Bellinham opening goal follow by Bukayo Saka brace.

Gareth Southgate’s men dominated from the off and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Bellingham capped an excellent all-round display when he headed home the opener on 35 minutes.

The Three Lions then made it three goals in eight minutes as Saka and Raheem Sterling

struck to round-off a first half that was disrupted by a lengthy delay following a concussion to Iran keeper Alireza Beiranvand.

England continued to boss it following the interval and Saka grabbed his second of the match just past the hour with a jinking run and shot.

Iran had barely threatened but pulled one back moments later when Mehdi Taremi rifled a fine first-time shot beyond Jordan Pickford.

Substitute then Marcus Rashford made it five within 49 seconds of taking to the pitch before

Jack Grealish tapped home a sixth to round-off a great day for Southgate and co.

Iran were awarded a dubious penalty kick via VAR deep into stoppage-time, which they converted, but it mattered little.

England XI vs Iran: Team News Possible Line-up

James Maddison or Kyle Walker will not be available for England World Cup opener against Iran today.

Maddison hasa slight knee issue, which has kept him out of some of England’s training sessions in Qatar.

Gareth Southgate has confirmed the Leicester midfielder will not feature in Monday’s Group B clash.

The 25-year-old, who was a surprise inclusion in the England squad for the World Cup,

has been struggling since limping off during Leicester’s win over West Ham in the last weekend of Premier League fixtures before the tournament.

Walker is still working his way back to fitness after groin surgery.

Southgate:

“In terms of player availability, everyone is available apart from James Maddison.”

“It is a little bit early for Kyle Walker although that’s ahead of where we thought he would be at this stage so that’s positive.”

Harry Maguire is expected to start in defence despite his struggles for Manchester United.

With no Reece James in Qatar, Kieran Trippier is set to start at right wing-back and Luke Shaw will start at left wing-back.

Jude Bellingham is expected to start alongside Declan Rice in midfield, while Southgate is likely to stick with Raheem Sterling despite his struggles at Chelsea this season.

England predicted XI (3-4-3):

Pickford;

Stones, Dier, Maguire;

Trippier, Bellingham, Rice, Shaw;

Saka, Kane, Sterling.
