Thomas partey talks: A deal on the Horizon

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is inching closer to a new deal with the Gunners, according to reports from Sports Mole.

The 31-year-old’s current contract is set to expire soon, sparking interest from top clubs like Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus.

Despite this, insiders believe Partey will likely stay at Arsenal due to mutual interest from both parties.

The Sticking Point: Wages

The main hurdle in the negotiations seems to be Partey’s wages.

Arsenal wants to reduce his £200,000-a-week salary, while Partey is holding out for a renewal that reflects his value to the team.

With Jorginho’s departure to Flamengo, Partey’s negotiating power has increased, and Arsenal is keen to keep him.

A potential solution could be a one-year plus one contract with an option to reduce wages in the second year.

Alternative Plans: Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly

If Partey were to leave, Arsenal would need to find a replacement.

Declan Rice, who has excelled in the left eight role, and Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has midfield experience, could fill the gap.

However, using them in this position would be a gamble, especially considering Rice’s attacking prowess.

Zubimendi’s Expected Role

If Partey stays, Martin Zubimendi would likely become Mikel Arteta’s first-choice number six next season.

However, with limited alternatives, Arsenal might need to sign another midfielder to avoid a gamble.

Partey’s Impact

Since joining Arsenal in 2020, Partey has made 167 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists.

His injury-free season has convinced Arsenal he’s worth keeping.
