Spain rain 7-0 win over Costa Rica as Ferran Torres netted twice and Gavi made history in a dominant display.

Dani Olmo and Marco Asensio finished well before Torres dispatched a penalty during a first half in which Luis Enrique’s men boasted 84% possession.

Torres netted his second after the break, before 18-year-old Gavi dispatched a sweetly-taken volley to make it five.

The Barcelona youngster became the youngest Spain player to appear at a major tournament,

and his goal made him the country’s youngest World Cup scorer ever.

Carlos Soler came off the bench in the second-half and made it six with a goal of his own late on.

Alvaro Morata also scored as he made it seven.

The result sees Spain climb to the top of the group, ahead of Japan on goal difference, and they face Germany next on Sunday.

Japan came back from behind to beat Germany 2-1 as Hansi Flick’s side suffered a second successive World Cup opening defeat.

Substitutes Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano scored second-half goals to earn Japan a

memorable victory at the Khalifa International Stadium.

There was a collective pause in the arena as the ball rolled down from the roof of the net before supporters realised it had gone in.

Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan had given Germany the lead from the penalty spot in the first half, before Japan substitute Ritsu Doan equalised in the 75th minute.

The equaliser came after a string of stunning saves at each end – Japan’s Shuichi Gonda

pulling off a double stop to deny Serge Gnabry and Jonas Hofmann, before Germany’s Manuel Neuer got his fingertips to Junya Ito‘s effort.

Germany, who finished bottom of their group in Russia in 2018, had missed several chances to extend their lead when the score was 1-0.

Germany, will play Spain next, while Japan face Costa Rica.

Germany vs Japan XI: Team News Possible Lineup

 Thomas Muller expected to lead the line for Germany against Japan.

Werder Bremen’s Niclas Fuellkrug Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko have been called up as head coach Hansi Flick looked for

more of a traditional front man after eight years of false nine experiments under Joachim Lowe.

Fuellkrug, 29, made his debut last week, and scored the winner against Oman,

along with Moukoko, who is the youngest player at the World Cup aged 18.

But it should be Muller up top for the first game after returning to training over the weekend,

along with Antonio Rudiger. Muller is looking to score his 11th World Cup goal.

Spain vs Costa Rica XI: Team News Possible Lineup

Spain and Costa Rica will take place at the Al-Tumama Stadium in Doha.

Spain are coming off the back of two disappointing campaigns in which they were ousted at the group stage in Brazil and then

failed to advance beyond the last-16 in Russia, while there was also semi-final heartbreak at the European Championship last summer.

But Luis Enrique’s side are determined to make a statement and return to top tournament form in Qatar,

with plenty of chatter over their controversial squad selection that omitted the likes of record appearance-maker Sergio Ramos but included Barcelona’s Ansu Fati.

Spain will not have Jose Gaya available for the tournament after the Valencia left-back

suffered a sprained ankle in training and was replaced by Barca youngster Alejandro Balde,

who could be needed to start the first match this week with Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal also battling illness.

Costa Rica: are bothered by no such injury concerns ahead of their fifth World Cup

appearance since 1990 and third in a row following an intercontinental play-off win over New Zealand back in June.

Veteran Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas remains their star player and will earn his 108th senior cap against Spain,

with former Arsenal forward Joel Campbell – who now plays his club football in Mexico with Leon – leading the attack.

Predicted Spain XI (4-3-3):

Carvajal, Laporte, Pau Torres, Alba;

Busquets, Gavi, Pedri;

Ferran Torres, Fati, Morata.

Predicted Costa Rica XI (4-4-2):

Oviedo, Calvo, Duarte, Fuller;

Bennette, Tejeda, Borges, Torres;

Belgium vs Canada XI: Team News Possible Lineup

Romelu Lukaku is a doubt as Belgium get their World Cup campaign underway against Canada on Wednesday.

The Chelsea loaned striker played just 29 minutes for Inter Milan since August and he

continues to battle a thigh injury, which is likely to keep him out of his country’s first two Group F matches.

Michy Batshuayi is another options to get the nod to lead the line, with the pressure on Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard behind him to

deliver as Belgium finally look to live up to their potential on the biggest stage.

Thomas Meunier came off the bench in a friendly against Egypt last week as he continues his recovery from injury and that

could be enough for him to start, with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are familiar names likely to once again start in the back three.

There is a decision for Roberto Martinez to make at left wing-back, with Yannick Carrasco

and Timothy Castagne pushing to earn their place in the starting lineup.

Canada have concerns over star man Alphonso Davies as they make their World Cup return,

even if the Bayern Munich left-back has declared he is “ready to start”.

Davies picked up a hamstring injury while playing for his club and is yet to fully recover,

not playing in either of the pre-tournament friendlies.

It remains to be seen whether Canada risk him or decide to save him for matches that, on paper at least, appear more favourable.

Lille’s Jonathan David will be crucial up front, with nine goals already in Ligue 1 this season.

He certainly has the ability to trouble that Belgium backline.

Predicted Belgium XI (3-4-3):

Debast, Alderweireld, Vertonghen;

Meunier, Tielemans, Witsel, Carrasco;

De Bruyne, Hazard, Batshuayi;

Predicted Canada XI (3-4-3):

Johnston, Vitoria, Miller;

Laryea, Hutchinson, Eustaquio, Adekugbe;

Buchanan, David, Larin

Morocco vs Croatia XI: Team News Possible Lineup

Morocco and Croatia begin their World Cup campaigns at the Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday in what looks set to be a very competitive and intriguing match.

In what looks a competitive group also containing the experienced Belgium and tournament wildcards in Canada,

most of the star players should be on display as the Atlas Lions take on 2018’s beaten finalists.

Hakim Ziyech is back in the fold after a managerial change in the Moroccan camp and headlines a talented group of players.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi and Bayern star Noussair Mazaroui are being tipped as perhaps the best full-back pairing in the competition as a whole.

Olivier Giroud shines as France came from behind to beat Australia by 4-1.

Olivier Giroud joined Thierry Henry as France’s joint-highest scorer ever

Adrien Rabiot and Kylian Mbappe brought the holders from behind to beat Australia in another extremely enjoyable match.

They take control of Group C following Denmark’s draw with Tunisia earlier in the day, and will not surrender their title easily.

Australia took a shock lead on nine minutes, Craig Goodwin finishing well after great work by Harry Souttar and Matt Leckie.

But inspired by the irrepressible Kylian Mbappe, France came back hard, and two goals in five minutes, from Rabiot and Giroud, gave them a half-time lead.

Things were slow after the break, France conserving energy and protecting the lead while Australia looked to hang on in the game.

But just after the hour, France exploded again to finish the contest, fine goals by Mbappe and

Giroud underlining the extent of their superiority and reminding the world that, for all their faults, their title won’t be relinquished without a fight.

Saudi Arabia came from behind to defeat Argentina Messi by 1-2 in their World Cup group opener.

Lionel Messi’s bid to win international football’s biggest prize in his fifth and final appearance got off to a dream start when he rolled in a penalty after just 10 minutes.

Saudi arabia ranked 51st in the world came from behind to secure the biggest win in their history against one of the competition favourites.

It marks Argentina’s first defeat in three years and in 36 matches and the first time they have lost a World Cup game after taking the lead since 1958.

Messi scored from the penalty spot in a dominant first-half where Argentina had the ball in the net four times – three of those efforts ruled out for offside.

Three minutes into the second-half, Saudi Arabia pounced after winning the ball in midfield with Saleh Al-Shehri charging forward.

Bursting past Tottenham defender Christian Romero, the 29-year-old fired across goal, beating Emiliano Martinez in goal.

Roared on the Saudi support, they struck again six minutes later with Salem Al Dawsari jinking

in from the left, sidestepping challenges before bending a superb effort into the far corner with Martinez getting a hand to it but unable to keep it out.

Argentina cranked up the pressure as they chased an equaliser, denied with Mohammad Alowais producing a fine reaction save to deny

Lisandro Martinez’s effort after a deflection off Nicolas Tagliafico.

Hassan Altambakti made a number of crucial interventions to keep his side in the lead with Abdulelah Al-Amri heading off the line in the eight minutes of injury time to deny Julian Alvarez.

In the final minutes, Yasser Al-Shahrani was felled after another heroic piece of defending,

taking a knee to the head from his own goalkeeper after clearing his lines with Messi lurking.

Arsene Wenger Named His Favourite To Win World Cup

Former Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger has named his favourite to win Qatar 2022, but not Argentina or Brazil.

Arsene Wenger picks France and believes France’s pre-World Cup setbacks could be a positive for Deschamps’ side in Qatar.

The reigning World Cup champions begin their defence against Australia on Tuesday evening,

while Didier Deschamps’ side will also play Denmark and Tunisia in Group D.

France are without several key players heading into the tournament, including Karim Benzema, Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante, Presnel Kimpembe and Christopher Nkunku.

Wenger asked to name his pick to win the World Cup, he told Wettbasis:

‘My number-one favourite is France. Not because I’m French by birth but because this Equipe Tricolore has the best attack.

‘If Didier Deschamps manages to ensure the necessary stability on the defensive,

then the reigning world champion will have a good chance of successfully defending his title.

‘When you’re the reigning world champion, the biggest danger is not having any worries.

The teams that take it easy and aren’t focused enough on their task almost always get a nasty surprise and don’t stay in the race for long.

‘To be honest, I even consider it good news that the French national team has work to do.

As a result, she had to renew a few things and I am now firmly assuming that this can only have a positive effect on the performance in Doha,

because Didier Deschamps’ team will be even more focused as a result.’

Wenger also believes Brazil, Argentina, England and Spain as France’s closest challengers.

‘In the past 12-15 months, the Brazilian national team has made the best impression.’

‘A very experienced side with a leader like Neymar who has been in fantastic shape for the last six months.

‘Argentina will certainly also be a factor to be reckoned with.

Lionel Messi will do everything to break this curse and finally become world champion.

‘England definitely has the potential to go far. Gareth Southgate’s team has always finished in the last four in previous tournaments. This is certainly no coincidence.

‘With Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Mason Mount, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and so on, England have plenty of young talent in their ranks.

‘I also see Spain, which should never be written off, because technically there is enormous potential in this team, especially with the defensive midfield duo of Pedri and Gavi.’

France XI vs Australia: Team News Possible Lineup

 France will be without Karim Benzema for the whole World Cup as they begin their defence against Australia on Tuesday.

Knee and hamstring complaints led to Les Bleus putting the Real Madrid striker on a bespoke recovery plan ahead of Tuesday’s Group D opener against Australia.

However, a fresh thigh tear suffered in training on Saturday has sadly ended Benzema’s World Cup hopes, with France confirming that the Ballon d’Or winner would play no part in the tournament.

Raphael Varane is another undertaking individual work having been called up despite his own injury issue.

Didier Deschamps is already without Christopher Nkunku, Presnel Kimpembe, Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante for the duration of the World Cup following injuries.

Benzema’s absence could lead to a starting berth for Olivier Giroud although Deschamps

has revealed plans to move away from his previous 3-4-1-2 formation that paired the striker up front with Kylian Mbappe.

Plans to play four at the back will see brothers Theo and Lucas Hernandez compete for the left-back spot with France preparing to line-up ina 4-3-3 with Mbappe deployed as a roaming winger.

Arsenal defender William Saliba is in contention to form a defensive partnership in Varane’s potential absence, alongside either Jules Kounde, Dayot Upamecano or Ibrahima Konate.

Predicted France XI:

Pavard, Saliba, Kounde, L. Hernandez;

Tchouameni, Veretout, Camavinga;

Dembele, Giroud, Mbappe.
