The match between Romania and the Netherlands started aggressively, with both teams chasing the ball to the ends of the pitch.
The Netherlands attempted to pass the ball around the back to settle down, but Romania’s high press was causing them trouble.
Memphis Depay had a chance to score, but he couldn’t convert.
Depay was offside when Xavi Simons slid the ball through to him, though he didn’t need to be.
Despite this, Depay tried to poke the ball past Florin Nita, but the Romanian keeper blocked it. Nita wasn’t aware that Depay was offside.
Romania was causing the Dutch numerous problems without aiming for goal until now.
Denis Man drove inside from the edge of the area and unleashed a powerful shot that flew just wide and high of the mark.
Cody Gakpo scored for the Netherlands! After a shaky start, the Netherlands enjoyed a good spell of possession.
Gakpo received the ball on the left side of the box, cut into the penalty area, and lashed his right foot at the ball.
It went in at the near post after touching the fingertips of keeper Nita.
This goal made Gakpo the joint top scorer at the European Championship with his third goal of the tournament.
Romania looked for a quick response. Hagi found Stanciu on the left, who cut back a pass into the box.
Denis Man was running up to the ball, but Ake held him off and took the sting out of Man’s shot.
Memphis Depay swung a delightful corner to the back post for Stef de Vrij to meet.
De Vrij nodded it down into the ground but missed the target.
The ball hit the side-netting, causing the Dutch fans to think they were two goals up, but they weren’t.
The Netherlands looked dangerous on corners as another one came in from Depay.
This time, it was cleared away only as far as Simons, who played it back to the keeper to help his side keep possession.
Radu Dragusin came to the rescue for Romania!
Denzel Dumfries was slid through on the right-hand side and seemed set to pass to Depay for a tap-in, but Dragusin somehow slid in between them and cleared the ball away.
Depay brilliantly got away from his defender on the right, drove into the box,
and played a pass into the middle that no one reached.
Simons got the ball on the left and tried a cross, which was blocked away for a corner.

The substitute Bogdan Racovitan found himself in trouble on the byline in his own box.
The ball was taken away from him by Dumfries, who cut it back for Simons in acres of space.
Hagi was on the left now, playing a low pass into the box which was cleared away for a corner by Van Dijk.
The following corner did not produce anything for Romania as the referee blew the whistle for halftime.
Romania started the second half just like they did the first, with a high press.
The Netherlands’ defense struggled to ward off the pressure, leading De Vrij to foul Stanciu.
The Netherlands enjoyed a good spell of possession as Dumfries received the ball on the right and played it to Malen in the box.
Malen’s touch wasn’t enough, and the ball fell to Depay, whose shot was cleared off the line by Racovitan.
Virgil van Dijk knocked a downward header from a corner against the upright, and the ball went wide.
The Dutch were really struggling to score the second goal that would almost certainly put the game to bed.
Moments after having a shot superbly saved by Nita, Cody Gakpo thought he had scored his fourth goal of the tournament, but there was a check for offside.
VAR confirmed that Gakpo was in an offside position.
Gakpo then played a brilliant backheel inside the box to Joey Veerman, who wrapped his foot around the ball aiming for the far corner.
The ball went just past the right post.
Radu Dragusin again came to Romania’s rescue, leaping to deny Depay a good chance in the air.
