Bayern Munich will head into the World Cup break with daylight between themselves and the chasing pack after a 2-0 win over Schalke on Saturday.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side have not been at their imperious best this season, they have lost one game in the Bundesliga, but were too good for Schalke on the road.

Serge Gnabry will be part of coach Hansi Flick’s Germany World Cup squad, and he will head to Qatar on the back of a goal in Gelsenkirchen.

The former Arsenal man set Bayern on their way to the three points with the opening goal on 38 minutes.

Gnabry picked up the ball on the right and drove forward before slipping it into the path of Jamal Musiala.

He continued his run, clearly in expectation that the gifted and in-form Musiala would find him.

On his 100th Bayern appearance, the youngest player in history to hit that mark for the club,

Musiala played a back heel that picked out its intended target – albeit in fortuitous fashion as it slipped off at a strangle angle.

No matter, it found Gnabry who drove the ball home to give Bayern the lead.

The points were secured when Bayern doubled their lead on 52 minutes.

Schalke have only themselves to blame, as the goal came from an awful free-kick from the left into the Bayern box.

Bayern countered at pace, with Musiala devouring the ground before drawing a defender in and slipping a pass into the path of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who composed himself before tucking the ball home.

The win moves Bayern six points clear of RB Leipzig, although Union Berlin could trim that advantage to four points with a win at Freiburg on Sunday.

Bayern Munich thrash Werder Bremen by 6-1 as the current champion lead at the top of the Bundesliga.

A devastating spell of four goals in the first 29 minutes – along with a missed penalty – plus two more late in the second half.

Bayern Munich will  be concerned about Sadio Mane, who departed injured in that period – though not as concerned as Senegal, who play their first World Cup game in just 13 days.

It took Bayern just six minutes to take the lead, Jamal Musiala scoring his fourth in four with a lovely composed finish.

And though Anthony Jung equalised soon after before Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting missed a penalty, Serge Gnabry with two and Leon Goretzka with one gave them three goals in seven minutes.

Bayern dominated the second half, but with the game safe and as changes were made, their intensity dropped.

But as Bremen tried, they added two late goals, Gnabry completing his hat-trick with a lovely finish before the 17-year-old Mathys Tel,

on as sub, rushed through the middle and walloped home from 20 yards.

Champions League Last-16 Draw: Liverpool To Face Real Radrid

Jurgen Klopp side Liverpool will face current champion Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League in a repeat of the 2022 final.

It is a repeat of the 2022 Champions League final earlier this year that saw Madrid win a tense affair 1-0.

The two teams also played in the 2018 final, which Real Madrid won 3-1.

The other blockbuster tie of the round sees Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich face off against Paris Saint-Germain and their attacking

trident of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

The French champions lost top spot on the final matchday of the group stage, thus risking a tougher draw like this one.

Tottenham Hotspur will face off against Italian champions AC Milan whilst London rivals

Chelsea will meet Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund, meaning a return to his former club for American forward Christian Pulisic.

Elsewhere, Premier League champions Manchester City will take on RB Leipzig from Germany.

The first-leg last-16 matches will be played on February 14/15/21/22,

with the second legs played on March 7/8/14/15.

The final will take place on June 10, 2023 at Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium.

The clash between 14-time champions Real Madrid and Liverpool comes less than a year after Vinicius Junior’s goal decided the 2022 final between the two sides.

As well as the 2018 final, Real also beat Liverpool in the 2021 quarter-finals, drawing 0-0 at Anfield after a 3-1 home win.

Bayern and PSG met in the 2021 quarter-finals too, with the Ligue 1 side advancing on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate score.

PSG missed out on top spot in their group after Benfica won 6-1 in their last match to edge the head-to-head record on away goals.

Bayern Munich maintained their 100 per cent winning record in the Champions League this season with a comfortable 2-0 win over Inter.

The game was a dead rubber as Bayern had already qualified as group winners,

having now won all six of their games, with Inter through to the knockout stages as runners-up in Group C.

Referee Ivan Kruzliak had a big call to make inside 10 minutes, when Sadio Mane handled the ball whilst covering his face with both hands.

However, following a long VAR review, in which the referee went to the monitor, he decided against giving a penalty and from that moment on Bayern kicked into gear.

Barcelona endured a truly wretched night as confirmation of another Champions League group-stage exit was followed by their latest defeat to Bayern Munich.

Sadio Mane, restored to the starting XI after being left on the bench for Saturday’s Bundesliga win over Hoffenheim,

further worsened the mood in Catalonia after only 10 minutes when he collected a superb Serge Gnabry pass and beat Hector Bellerin

starting after Sergi Roberto’s shoulder injury suffered against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday – all too easily before lifting the ball over Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

It was far from vintage Bayern in a first half broken up by plenty of niggly fouls,

with Barca posing a threat through the pace and trickery of Ousmane Dembele but unable to find any sort of final ball.

They fell 2-0 behind when another perfect Gnabry pass was matched up with a second well-timed run,

this time from Eric Maxim Chopou-Moting, who coolly slotted his fourth goal in five games between the legs of Ter Stegen.

An important Bellerin intervention and Ter Stegen save from Jamal Musiala denied Bayern a third before the break,

while Robert Lewandowski was awarded a penalty against his former club after a challenge by Matthijs de Ligt,

only for English referee Anthony Taylor to change his decision after being advised by VAR Stuart Attwell to consult the pitchside monitor.

Bayern did initially celebrate a stylish third goal after half-time, but Gnabry had just strayed offside as he collected Joshua Kimmich’s pass before curling an excellent effort into the far corner.

They did eventually make it 3-0 with the last kick of the game, unmarked substitute

Benjamin Pavard stroking home a half-volley at the back post to complete a desperately dismal night in Barcelona’s recent history.

Barcelona XI Vs Bayern Munich: Team News, Injury Latest & Possible Line Up

Barcelona are without full-back Sergi Roberto in the hope to progress in Champions League tonight against German giant club Bayern Munich.

The 30-year-old has been a regular at right-back in recent weeks but he was stretchered off with a shoulder injury in the win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday and will not be available against the Bundesliga giants.

In his absence Hector Bellerin is in line for his first European start since his summer arrival,

though Xavi could also opt to shift Jules Kounde over to full-back and partner Eric Garcia with Gerard Pique in the centre of defence.

Gavi limped off over the weekend but the Barcelona boss has insisted that “seems to be nothing” and expects the midfielder, who picked up the Golden Boy award last week, to be fully fit for Bayern’s visit.

Pedri looks certain to start in midfield, with two of Sergio Busquets, Frenkie de Jong and Gavi partnering him, while Robert Lewandowski will lead the line against his former club.

The Polish had seven shots in Barcelona’s defeat in Munich earlier this season but could not find a way past Manuel Neuer – he’ll be desperate to get on the scoresheet at the Nou Camp.

Ousmane Dembele scored and assisted another three goals last time out so can expect to start, with Raphinha the preferred option on the other flank, meaning Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati may have to settle for places on the bench.

Predicted Barcelona XI (4-3-3):

Ter Stegen;

Bellerin, Garcia, Kounde, Balde;

Busquets, Pedri, De Jong;

Raphinha, Lewandowski, Dembele

Bayern Munich beat Barcelona 2-0 at the Allianz Arena, making it two wins from two in the Champions League this season.

The game had been billed as the Robert Lewandowski show which, given that it was his first time back at the Allianz Arena since leaving Bayern for Barca in July, was to be expected.

He had numerous chances in the first half but failed to convert them, heading over the crossbar, volleying over one-on-one, forcing an improvised save from Manuel Neuer and then,

much to his frustration, threatening to score once more only to be denied by an acrobatic block from Noussair Mazraoui.

Lewandowski’s misses aside, Barca had the better of a frantic opening 25 minutes with Gavi, Pedri and Raphinha also going close.

Gavi, in particular, was excellent in midfield, allowing the visitors to set the tempo.

Having weathered a spell of almost unbearable pressure, Bayern showed tentative signs of improvement as half-time approached.

While they continued to make mistakes, not least when Neuer had the ball at his feet,

Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane gave them some impetus, with the latter teeing up Marcel Sabitzer for a shot which whistled past the upright.

Barca made a fast start to the second half, Raphinha firing just wide from the edge of the area.

They conceded against the run of play, however, after half-time substitute Leon Goretzka, on for Sabitzer, had forced Marc-Andre ter Stegen to palm away a fierce drive from distance.

From the ensuing corner, Lucas Hernandez ghosted in ahead of Marcos Alonso to meet Joshua Kimmich’s clipped delivery and nod in at the near post.

Barca were rocked back on their heels and, suddenly, their opponents seemed to be everywhere.

Not long afterwards an excellent passing move ended with Musiala slipping through Sane as he ran off his shoulder in midfield.

His pace took him one-on-one with Ter Stegen and he slid the ball calmly into the back of the net.

Barca had plenty of opportunities to get back into the game but, just like in the first half, they failed to take them.

The best chance fell for Pedri when he skipped clear in the box and dinked over Neuer, only for the ball to clip the post and bounce away.

FC Barcelona XI Vs Bayern: Team News, Possible Lineup

All eyes will be on Robert Lewandowski as he looks certain to start against former club Bayern Munich in the Champions League later today.

The Polish striker has been in sensational form for Barcelona sice arriving in the summer,

scoring a hat-trick last week in his first European match for the club as Xavi’s side cruised to a 5-1 win over Viktoria Plzen.

While there is pretty much no doubt who will be leading the line, there is a decision for Xavi to make in wide areas.

Ousmane Dembele has been similarly impressive and is expected to start, with Raphinha and Ansu Fati competing for the other spot.

Marcos Alonso and Hector Bellerin have both travelled to Munich, after making their debuts over the weekend against Cadiz.

That lineup was a largely rotated one, with Pedri among those he will surely come straight back into the side.

Bellerin has a chance of starting again but Jules Kounde looks a more likely option at right-back, while Alejandro Balde is probably leading the race to start on the left, leaving Alonso and Jordi Alba having to settle for places on the bench.

There are plenty of options in the centre of defence for Xavi too.

Ronald Araujo and Eric Garcia appear to be the favoured pairing, though that could change in the future should Kounde move inside.

It seems probable that the Frenchman remains at right-back for now though, offering a more defensive option to combat the huge threat of Bayern out wide.

Predicted Barcelona XI (4-3-3):

Ter Stegen;

Kounde, Araujo, Garcia, Balde;

Busquets, Gavi, Pedri;

Raphinha, Lewandowski, Dembele

Bayern Munich got their quest for a seventh European Cup off to the perfect start by beating Inter Milan 2-0 in Italy.

The German outfit dominated from the first whistle and thoroughly deserved the three points, with Leroy Sane playing a starring role.

The visitors were on the front foot from the off and regularly tested Inter’s debutant Andre Onana, who made a string of fairly straightforward saves from Joshua Kimmich.

The goalkeeper was stretched somewhat more when he made a sublime stop to deny Thomas Muller though, diving high to his left to tip a powerful drive over the bar.

It looked like only a matter of time before Bayern took the lead, and they finally did so on 25-minutes when Sane brilliantly brought down Kimmich’s long ball, rounded Onana and slid into the bottom corner.

That advantage was nearly doubled before the break too, as Alphonso Davies saw his curling effort superbly tipped away, with Muller’s rebound charged down before Sane fired wide.

Inter, who were sloppy in the final third, had a big chance to level after half-time as Edin Dzeko saw a ricochet fall his way in the box, but he fired straight at Manuel Neuer from close range.

That proved to be one of very few chances for the hosts, and they were made to pay for wasting it when Sane doubled the lead,

rounding off a sublime bit of one touch football, as he and Mane exchanged a pair of one-twos before firing home via a deflection off Danilo D’Ambrosio.

From then on, it was a walk in the park for Bayern, who were even able to withdraw some of their stars, perhaps with one eye on Saturday’s Bundesliga clash with Stuttgart.

Simeone Inzaghi on the other hand threw on numerous attacking options, but they barely mustered so much as a shot in the final 20-minutes, surrendering to defeat with barely a whimper.

Lewandowski: I Laughed When I Heard Cries Of 'Hala Madrid'

Former Dortmund and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski was one of the stars of Barcelona’s Joan Gamper Trophy match against Pumas on Sunday, with the Poland international involved in four of Xavi’s side’s six goals.

He is happy with his decision to sign for the Catalan club, as he explained in a recent interview shortly after the 6-0 win over the Mexicans.

Lewandowski is, however, slightly sad about the manner in which things ended with Bayern Munich.

“I know that hurt a lot of fans,” he told Sport1. “I can understand that and now I just apologise for that.

At that time it was important and necessary for me to make it clear that I was ready for a change.

“At the end of the day, we are all human. After 12 years in Germany, it was clear to me that my time was over.

I wanted to make that clear, and of course it was not easy for Bayern to accept a sale during this phase.

“It was a difficult situation for everyone involved and we had to find the best solution.

I needed this change, this move to another country, to another club. I feel like a child who has a new toy.”

Some Bayern fans yelled pro-Real Madrid slogans like ‘Hala Madrid‘ at the striker as he left the Bavarian’s training camp when he returned to collect his things.

“Yes, I heard that, and I laughed.” “But there were also some people shouting my name. That was really nice.

“In the last few weeks I have also met some fans in the street who have expressed their understanding for my situation and wished me all the best.”

Lewandowski spoke of pride at his Barcelona presentation.

“I didn’t expect so many fans. It doesn’t matter if he had more or less than other players presented before by Barcelona like Ronaldinho or [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic,”

“Those were different times anyway. It’s very nice when you experience so much support directly.

It’s something that stays with you forever.

“I always wanted to play in LaLiga, that was clear to me.

And when Barcelona came knocking on the door this time, they were the only option for me.

“There were other offers, but I wasn’t interested.”
