Lionel Messi Given Guard Of Honour By PSG Team-Mates

Lionel Messi was given a guard of honour by his teammates at the training ground, before being presented with a small trophy by PSG’s sporting director Luis Campos.

The former Barcelona legend was the star of the show in Qatar, scoring seven goals and winning the coveted Golden Ball award for a record second time.

Since then he has been back in his home country celebrating the success, though the team’s bus parade through the streets of

Buenos Aires had to be abandoned due to chaotic scenes after four million people turned out to greet the players.

Messi is now back in Paris as he looks to help the club finally lift the Champions League for the first time, and he received a warm welcome on his return to the training ground.

I’m happy and I’m going to get ready for what’s coming up.”

Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick in the final and his penalty in the shootout but still ended up on the losing side, has already played twice PSG since the World Cup.

He started, and scored, against Strasbourg just ten days after the Qatar final, in a match that Neymar was sent off in as he picked up a second yellow card for diving.

Messi is believed to clinch his eighth Balon d’Or award should he take PSG to their first Champions League victory later this year.

“I Don't Like To Compare Myself”_ Erling Haaland Played Down Mbappe Rivalry

Erling Haaland has played down his so-called ‘rivalry’ with Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe in a fascinating new interview.

The Norwegian , who has scored 24 goals in 19 games since joining City from Dortmund in the summer following his highly-anticipated £51.5 million summer move to Manchester City.

He is currently on course to become the third player to win the Golden Boot in his debut top-flight season after scoring 18 goals in 13 Premier League games

And as a result of his fine form, many are touting Haaland to ignite a Messi & Ronaldo type-rivalry with another top forward – Kylian Mbappe.

“I don’t like to compare myself with others.

I think you need to be your own player when it comes to that so I don’t like to compare or anything with that.”

“I think the media has been doing that with Ronaldo and Messi for the last 10 years and I think they’ve been pushing each other as well.

I think it’s been a positive thing. Barcelona and Madrid against each other. It’s been the perfect rivalry.

“But I don’t think about this [rivalry with Mbappe], honestly.”

Kylian Mbappe made it clear last year that Haaland isn’t quite on his level yet, saying he needs to show more longevity before being labelled football’s next big star.

“It is his second year, we are getting to know him. It is the beginning for him. I’m happy for him, for what he’s doing.”

“I have played up front, I have played on the left and on the right.”

“In all humility, I don’t think everyone is capable of changing positions like this every year and maintaining a great performance at the highest level.

“That did not fall from the sky. If I talk about the baggage that they gave me in adolescence, it’s all there.

“I have managed to work on my weak points, but above all to perfect my strengths, because they have always told me that it is through your strengths that you are going to win.”

Mbappe netted a hat-trick in the World Cup final last weekend, even though it was unable to prevent France’s from lifting the World Cup.

Meanwhile Haaland made a goalscoring return in Manchester City’s first competitive game since November as they defear Liverpool on Thursday night.

Lionel Messi Agrees One-Year Extension With PSG

Lionel Messi was widely reported to be set to move to the MLS with his deal in the French capital expiring at the end of this season.

But, there is a reporta that the Argentine star agreed a one-year extension with Paris Saint-Germain, in a move that would keep the forward in the French capital until 2024.

Messi, after so long and so many attempts, finally reached the zenith of his footballing career last weekend as Argentina lifted the World Cup at Qatar 2022.

And now it appears, with the 35-year-old seeming in as good as form as he has ever been, that he is set to stay in European

football’s elite until 2024, according to a report in Le Parisien, which states there is “an agreement in principle”.

The move would potentially see Messi have two more shots at winning another Champions League title, a competition he has not won since 2015.

The Champions League will also give Messi the chance to dethrone great rival Cristiano Ronaldo as all-time top scorer in the

competition, with the ex-Barcelona man needing just 11 goals to go ahead of the Portuguese, the latter being currently without a club.

Messi is currently in his native Argentina celebrating his country’s momentous World Cup win, but will be expected back in Paris shortly to help drive his club’s campaign for domestic and European honours under Christoph Galtier.

The report in Le Parisien states that the contract will be finalised upon Messi’s return from Argentina, with a meeting alongside PSG

president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi and sporting director Luis Campos set to be where the precise value and duration of the deal will be agreed upon.

PSG signed off ahead of the break for the Qatar World Cup with a routine 5-0 win over Auxerre at the Parc des Princes.

Their opening goal had a touch of controversy about it.

Kylian Mbappe turned in Nuno Mendes’ cross, but Neymar clearly handled the ball in the build-up.

The VAR review eventually determined that the handball had occurred in a previous phase of play, and the goal was allowed to stand.

There was nothing controversial about their second goal.

Shortly after half-time, Mendes dribbled through half of the Auxerre defence on the left before clipping a ball into the box.

Carlos Soler was there to nod it past Benoit Costil and double the Parisians’ lead.

Six minutes later, the match was put beyond doubt when Achraf Hakimi showed off his extreme pace to turn an Auxerre corner into a PSG goal.

The Moroccan raced away as PSG cleared the corner, and no defender was anywhere near him when he slipped his shot past Costil.

Second-half substitutes Hugo Ekitike and Renato Sanches combined for PSG’s fourth with 10 minutes to play.

Ekitike rounded the keeper but couldn’t find the angle to shoot, instead pulling it back for his Portuguese teammate to score.

Ekitike added a goal of his own shortly afterwards, pouncing on a loose ball in the Auxerre box to score.

Danilo Pereira’s late goal gave Paris Saint-Germain all three points against high-flying Lorient to extend their lead at the top of Ligue 1.

It was a very lively opening with PSG dominating possession and Lorient looking to spring on the counter-attack.

The home side, who came into this one in fourth place and chasing a European place, had a great spell in which they won three corners one after the other but couldn’t fashion any real chances.

PSG found the breakthrough after eight minutes after a terrible mix up at the back.

PSG pressed in numbers and when goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo received the ball his attempted clearance was blocked by Neymar, who then smashed it home to make it 1-0.

Lorient continued to threaten on the counter-attack, but they just couldn’t manage get their final ball right.

The home side came out looking full of energy in the second half much like in the first and after threatening on numerous occasions they finally got their goal.

Lorient top scorer Moffi finished off a slick move, blasting the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma, and just minutes later Lorient were inches from going 2-1 up, with Terem Moffi this time striking the crossbar.

PSG stepped up their intensity in pursuit of a goal which would put them ahead.

Lorient stood firm, with almost every player behind the ball defending deep but they were eventually undone from a set piece.

Portuguese international Pereira powerfully headed home a Neymar corner inside the last ten minutes to give PSG a valuable three points to extend their lead at the top.

A valiant effort from Lorient but in the end PSG just had enough to get over the line.

Paris Saint-Germain rounded off their group stage campaign in the Champions League with a 2-1 win over Juventus – but it was only enough for them to qualify second in the group.

Before the match, Les Parisiens knew they had to match or better Benfica’s result against Maccabi Haifa to go to the top of Group H despite already securing qualification for the round of 16, but the Portuguese side routed Haifa to steal the group at the death. As for the Old Lady, who had already bowed out of the Champions League, they knew a place in the Europa League knockout round play-off would be secured if they matched or bettered the Israeli side.

Juventus started off with intent, but it was PSG who took an early lead in the 12th minute. Kylian Mbappe rode out a couple of challenges to hit a low, powerful strike from outside the area past Wojciech Szczesny and into the net, with the help of the woodwork. The Bianconeri had their equaliser shortly before half-time, as Leonardo Bonucci turned in Juan Cuadrado’s diving header across the six-yard box to score his first Champions League goal in six years. However, PSG found their winner with 20 minutes of time remaining. Nuno Mendes, who had been on the pitch for a matter of seconds, latched onto Mbappe’s through-ball, before finishing low into the far corner. Juventus thought they had equalised nine minutes later, but Manuel Locatelli’s tap-in on the rebound was ruled out for offside. With news filtering through of the need to score again, PSG boss Christophe Galtier urged his men forward, but the goal they needed didn’t arrive.
