Arsenal missed the chance to move eight points clear at the top after a 1-1 draw with Brentford.

Arsenal dominated the ball in the first half, but the biggest chances fell to the visitors.

Ivan Toney hit the post with time and space in the Gunners’ box, while Bryan Mbeumo had a goal rather harshly disallowed for a foul in the build-up.

Mathias Jensen was causing chaos with his long throws, and Toney was dominating his match-up with the Arsenal centre backs.

Ten minutes into the second half, it was Toney again with a big chance to score but his shot was inches wide of Aaron Ramsdale’s goal.

Arsenal took the lead when Trossard struck at the back post four minutes after coming off the bench.

Toney made amends for his earlier misses in the 74th minute with a header from close range.

Arsenal just couldn’t clear a Brentford free-kick, and the England man put it away. VAR was consulted, but after a prolonged check the goal stood.

Arsenal XI vs Brentford: Team News Possible Lineup

Arsenal are back to the Emirates on Saturday afternoon for a London derby against Brentford in the Premier League.

Arteta have confirmed that both Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe remain out of meeting with Brentford.

“They have started to some activities and have been outside but they are not ready yet to contribute,” he said.

Arsenal’s number nine Gabriel Jesus has now returned to the London Colney training centre as he steps up his recovery from a

knee injury, but manager Mikel Arteta says it is too early to put a timeline on his first-team return.

Jesus has not played for the Gunners since November, having suffered a knee injury while on international duty with Brazil at the World Cup.

So far, however, Eddie Nketiah has done a fine job of deputising, scoring four times in six League starts since the winter break.

Arteta:

Gabi’s doing really well, he’s already been outside a little bit.

It’s still early stages and he keeps pushing everybody every single day.

We need to respect timelines and processes but he’s doing really well.

“He’s still too far from [a return date]. You see now when you put loads through that knee and get some movement and actions,

they’re not as controlled as the ones he has been doing. [You have to see] how the knee reacts.”

Meanwhile Mohamed Elneny is expected to miss the rest of the season after going under the knife.

Arsenal Possible Lineup:

Ramsdale;

White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko;

Odegaard, Partey, Xhaka;

Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli

Brentford claimed a deserved 3-1 victory against Liverpool at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Bees were missing top scorer Ivan Toney through injury but it did little to undermine their game-plan as Thomas Frank’s side held on to take all three points.

Darwin Nunez had an early opportunity cleared off the line for the visitors before Ibrahima Konate was unfortunate to see a right-wing corner divert off his knee and into his own net on 19 minutes.

Liverpool were much-improved and dominated for long spells throughout the second period but could not muster an equaliser,

leaving Bryan Mbeumo to rub salt in their wounds by firing in a clincher six minutes from time.

The result means Liverpool stay sixth and remain four points behind fourth-placed Manchester United having played a game more.

Tottenham came from behind to earn a point at Brentford and almost won it when heading against the bar in the closing stages.

Brentford took a deserved lead when Mathias Jensen’s deflected shot could only be pushed by Fraser Forster into the path of Vitaly Janelt who slotted home gleefully.

Their lead was doubled when Christian Norgaard flicked Bryan Mbeumo‘s corner into the path of Ivan Toney who nudged home from three yards out.

There looked no way back for Tottenham until 20 minutes into the second half when Clement Lenglet put in a deep cross from the left flank which Kane rose to head superbly home.

Six minutes later the game was level when Dejan Kulusevski pulled back for Pierre Hojbjerg who smashed home.

Five minutes from time, Kane did brilliantly to beat Bees keeper David Raya to a cross and was unlucky to see his flicked header come back off the crossbar.

Spurs pushed again for a winner but both sides had to settle for a draw in a pulsating match.

Tottenham XI vs Brentford: Team News Possible Lineup

Tottenham are one of a number of sides to have had a lot of individuals away at the World Cup.

But, Conte will be demanding that the players involved in the competition hit the ground running on Monday afternoon.

Harry Kane is likely to return for Tottenham’s, but Hugo Lloris, Ivan Perisic and Cristian Romero are set to miss out on the starting line-up.

The trio were all involved in the latter stages of the World Cup, with Perisic’s Croatia finishing third and Romero winning the trophy with

Argentina after beating a France side captained by Lloris in the final.

Perisic returned to training at Hotspur Way on Friday and will be in contention for the trip to west London, boss Antonio Conte has confirmed.

Lloris will also be involved but reserve goalkeeper Fraser Forster is set to start the game, while Romero has been given additional time off after returning to Argentina to join his country’s celebrations.

The centre-back will be back for the meeting with Aston Villa on New Year’s Day .

Conte confirmed that Kane is ready to start against the Bees as he looks to bounce back from his penalty heartache with England,

but Richarlison is facing three to four weeks out with the hamstring injury he suffered while on duty with Brazil.

Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended but injured anyway, which should mean Yves Bissouma joins Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the midfield engine room against Brentford.

Tottenham Possible Lineup (3-4-3):

Forster;

Dier, Lenglet, Davies;

Emerson, Hojbjerg, Bissouma, Doherty;

Kulusevski, Kane, Son.

Ivan Toney strikes twice to show southgate what they will miss in him at World Cup as brentford defeat Manchester City at home

Brentford made a bright start and deservedly took the lead on 16 minutes when Ivan Toney nodded home Ben Mee’s flick-on.

It was the Brentford forward’s 17th league goal of 2022 and a timely early reminder of his quality following his omission from England’s World Cup squad.

Man City improved as the half wore on and levelled seconds before the interval when Phil Foden lashed a rising shot beyond David Raya.

The home side dominated following the interval but found it difficult to break down a resilient visiting rearguard.

Toney looked like he had passed up the chance to secure a shock win when he could not squeeze a shot beyond Ederson but minutes later grabbed the winner.

The result sees City remain in second place, two points adrift of Arsenal who play Wolves later on Saturday evening.

Elsewhere, Phil Foden is pushing to start in the final run out ahead of the World Cup after being a surprise substitute for three games on the spin.

Chelsea XI vs Brentford: Team News, Injury Latest Possible Line-up

Chelsea hope to continue their winning streak under the new manage Graham Potter as they prepare to face local rivals Brentford in the Premier League this evening.

Chelsea don’t have any new injury ahead today’s clash with brentford.

Graham Potter explained that Thiago Silva had a tight hamstring after Chelsea’s 2-0 away win

at Aston Villa and added in his pre-match press conference that his star centre-back has no further complaints.

The 38-year-old could still be rested to manage his fitness ahead of a home match against Manchester United on Saturday evening.

Hakim Ziyech has been out with a cold and is nearing a return to at least make the matchday squad against Thomas Frank’s side.

Potter:

“It’s as you were, no other problems for the weekend.”

Adding about Silva:

“It’s obviously 24/48 hours [since Aston Villa] so we need to make sure the recovery is right for him.

But no problems injury-wise, it is just the recovery.”

Longer-term absentees like N’Golo Kante, Reece James and Wesley Fofana will all be out until after the World Cup or longer.

Chelsea have announced that James is out for eight weeks and Potter has explained that Fofana won’t be back soon either.

Kante has been ruled out until the new year after another hamstring setback.

The biggest question on Wednesday will be how much Potter rotates his team with a huge Premier League match against top-six opposition on the horizon.

Predicted Chelsea XI (3-4-3):

Kepa;

Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Koulibaly;

Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek, Cucurella;

Mount, Aubameyang, Sterling

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League with a comfortable 3-0 win over Brentford.

Centre back William Saliba got the Gunners going early with a header from a Bukayo Saka corner after 17 minutes.

11 minutes later Gabriel Jesus doubled the visitors’ lead with a powerful header from an excellent Granit Xhaka cross.

How Xhaka found himself in so much space right on the edge of the Brentford box will remain a mystery.

The home side were woeful in the first half, with the usually boisterous crowd virtually silent throughout.

Arsenal controlled the ball, holding 64% possession, and their defensive shape also denied Brentford their usual attacking patterns.

The Bees did find some joy in behind ersatz right-back Ben White, but goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was never tested.

Brentford’s strike partnership of Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney managed just four touches in the Arsenal box combined.

Any hopes that the home side could regroup after the break was swept away when Fabio Vieira scored Arsenal’s third.

Vieira, making his first start for the club after joining in the summer, hit a sensational long-range strike that dipped and clipped the post on its way past David Raya.

Brentford improved in the final moments, but barely mounted a single attack of consequence in a surprisingly poor performance.

Arsenal head into the international break atop the Premier League, and face rivals Tottenham in their first match back.
