Barcelona Identify Surprise Replacement for Frenkie de Jong Amid Liverpool Interest

Barcelona are reportedly eyeing Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey as a potential replacement for Frenkie de Jong, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool.

With Partey’s contract set to expire next summer, Barcelona are monitoring his situation closely, and the Ghana international could be available on a free transfer.

A Proven La Liga Pedigree Partey, 31, has already demonstrated his quality in La Liga during his eight-year stint with Atletico Madrid.

He won the 2020-21 La Liga title with the Rojiblancos and has consistently shown his ability to perform at the highest level.

A Versatile Option for Barcelona

Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, is a huge admirer of Partey’s versatility and physical profile.

The midfielder has primarily played in a holding role for Arsenal but can also occupy a number eight position or fill in as a right-back.

This flexibility would make him an attractive option for Barcelona as they look to strengthen their midfield.

Liverpool’s Interest in De Jong

Meanwhile, Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing De Jong next year.

The Dutch midfielder is entering the final 18 months of his contract with Barcelona, and the Catalan giants may be resigned to losing him if he doesn’t agree to a renewal.

A Warning for Arsenal

Arsenal, however, are at risk of losing Partey for nothing next summer.

The Gunners have already seen several high-profile players leave on free transfers in recent years, and allowing Partey to depart without a fee would be another financial blow.

With Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, and Mikel Merino emerging as Arsenal’s first-choice midfield trio, Partey’s future at the Emirates Stadium remains uncertain.

A January Dilemma for Arsenal

As the January transfer window approaches, Arsenal must decide whether to cash in on Partey or risk losing him for nothing next summer.

With the midfielder’s injury record and the emergence of other options, Arsenal may be tempted to consider bids for Partey in January.

However, manager Mikel Arteta will be keen to maintain a strong squad as the Gunners chase success on multiple fronts.
