Joshua Zirkzee Criticizes His Performance Despite Scoring Netherlands’ First Goal

Joshua Zirkzee scored his first international goal as the Netherlands beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 5-2 on Saturday evening.

The Manchester United striker was left in shock after the match at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, as the Oranje opened their UEFA Nations League campaign with a big win.

For his third appearance and his first start for his country, Zirkzee scored his first Dutch goal, with a header after stopping a shot from Xavi Simons.

Towards the end of the first half and with the score tied at 1-1, Zirkzee set up Tijani Reijnders for the second Dutch goal of the evening. “Yes, proud, proud moment,” he told UEFA.com after the match.

“My family was there, my grandparents came to see me for the first time in a long time, so it was a great day for us all.

“It is clear that Bosnia and Herzegovina defended in their own half and it is up to us to look for a combination and find ourselves, that we could be more effective today although we did a great job. So overall, I think it’s good.”

In an interview on Dutch television, Zirkzee was somewhat critical of his work, saying that he should see Reijnders more often.

“It went well, I think I made a few mistakes. I can help Reijnders again. “We had a good click during the game,” he added.

The Netherlands will be back on Tuesday at home against their German rivals. After that, Zirkzee will return to United to prepare for their Premier League trip to Southampton on Saturday.
