Tottenham Hotspur have announced the signing of highly-rated teenager Mason Melia from St Patrick’s Athletic in a deal worth an initial £1.5m.
The 17-year-old forward, who has been touted as one of Ireland’s brightest prospects, will officially join Spurs in January 2026.
Beating Competition from Premier League Rivals
Melia’s transfer to Tottenham is a significant coup for the North London club, who beat off competition from Arsenal and Manchester City to secure his services.
The forward had previously been on trial with Manchester City, but Spurs have won the race for his signature.
Record-Breaking Transfer Fee
The transfer fee paid by Tottenham is a record for the League of Ireland, surpassing the £500,000 move that took Liam Scales to Celtic from Shamrock Rovers in August 2021. Melia’s deal with Spurs will run until 2031.
Melia’s Impressive Resume
Despite his tender age, Melia has already amassed an impressive resume, scoring 10 goals and registering three assists in 54 appearances for St Patrick’s Athletic in all competitions.
He has also represented Ireland at international level, earning praise from his manager Stephen Kenny for his “terrific talent” and “exceptional attitude”.
Future Prospects
While Melia will not join Spurs until January 2026, he is expected to be part of the club’s senior squad upon his arrival.
With another year of development in the League of Ireland, Melia will be well-prepared to make an impact in the Premier League.
