Wayne Rooney has been remembered as a permanent member of the class after scoring a fine goal in Manchester United’s friendly against Celtic on Saturday.
The all-time United striker has turned to management in recent years, managing Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle, who signed him on a three-year deal in May.
But the 38-year-old returned to match form at Old Trafford as he supported United in a charity game against Celtic – the first time Rooney has donned the club’s famous 10 shirt since leaving in 2017.
The game remained scoreless at half-time, when United conceded a free kick close to Celtic’s penalty area. Rooney, as he usually does in his first season, took care of the situation, no doubt dreaming of passing the ball into the top corner.
And that’s what he did to the delight of everyone at Old Trafford – Rooney’s shot was brilliantly deflected past Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc, who remained unmarked in midfield.
Rooney celebrated with his former team-mates, including Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia and Darren Fletcher. United States players Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov also took part in the game.
Ahead of the game, Rooney said: “It will be a special time to be back at Old Trafford, and all for a good cause. It would be great to play there again. I can’t wait to see all the fans again, I’m really looking forward to it.
Celtic eventually equalized through Gary Hooper, who then took the lead with a stunning penalty. Rooney, Denis Irwin and Fletcher all scored for United, but former academy player Danny Webber had his shot saved.
This mess cost United dearly, with Celtic winning all five of their penalties. But this game will be remembered as a reminder of Rooney’s genius.
