Former Premier League goalkeeper Michel Vorm has expressed his doubts about Giorgi Mamardashvili’s ability to displace Alisson Becker as Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Alisson’s Unrivaled Status
Vorm, who played for Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur, believes Alisson’s reputation and performances make him the undisputed number one at Liverpool.
“For me, Alisson – it’s not even a question,” Vorm said. “He has so much credit at the club, and something really crazy needs to happen for him to be displaced.”
Mamardashvili’s Challenge
Mamardashvili, who joined Liverpool in the summer of 2023-24 from Valencia, has impressed with his performances for Georgia at Euro 2024.
However, Vorm believes the 24-year-old has his work cut out to match Alisson’s level.
“Alisson is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and he showed that in the Premier League and at the national team,” Vorm said.
Planning for the Future?
Liverpool’s signing of Mamardashvili has raised questions about Alisson’s long-term future at the club.
However, Vorm doesn’t see Alisson leaving Liverpool anytime soon. “Maybe some club in Saudi Arabia will buy him for a lot of money, then maybe he will leave, but I don’t see him in the next couple of years playing for a different club,” Vorm said.

The Challenge Ahead for Mamardashvili
If Mamardashvili is to replace Alisson, he will need to demonstrate his ability to be proactive and play out from the back, skills that Alisson has mastered.
The Premier League will undoubtedly test Mamardashvili’s abilities more than La Liga, and he will need to rise to the challenge if he is to become Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper.
