Dusan Vlahovic converted a penalty, which also saw Freiburg go down to 10 men before half-time, and Federico Chiesa scored in stoppages as Juventus book their spot in the Europa League quarter-finals.

Manuel Locatelli blasted straight at the goalkeeper, but Szczesny had to work hard to palm a towering Matthias Ginter header off the line from a corner.

Dusan Vlahovic thought he had opened the scoring on 27 minutes when a free kick found Gleison Bremer’s header,

it was palmed onto the crossbar and Moise Kean knocked it down for the Serbian to fire in from five yards.

However, it was disallowed by VAR for offside on Kean’s touch.

Kean’s angled drive was parried by Mark Flekken’s legs, then as the move continued Federico Gatti saw his shot cleared off the line by Ginter.

However, VAR showed that Gatti’s effort was first charged down by Manuel Gulde’s raised arm and he was already booked, so this became a penalty and second yellow card.

Vlahovic stepped up and managed to squirm the spot-kick in, despite Flekken getting a leg to it.

Gregoritsch hit a free kick that swung not far wide of the far top corner, while Szczesny made a tough save on Lucas Holer after a scramble on a free kick.

It was difficult to tell that Juve had an extra man in the second half, as the hosts continued to push for at least an equaliser on the night, infuriating Max Allegri.

This changed when Chiesa came off the bench, as first his solo effort was pushed onto the crossbar by the goalkeeper,

then he scored moments later on Adrien Rabiot’s assist by sweeping in from 12 yards.

Arsenal were sent crashing out of the Europa League as Sporting Lisbon won 5-3 on penalties at the Emirates.

Mikel Areta’s Gunners looked in control when Granit Xhaka gave them a lead on the night and on aggregate.

But the red half of North London was silenced when Pedro Goncalvez netted a stunner from 46 yards to beat the despairing dive of Aaron Ramsdale.

Arsenal were the better side in extra-time, but were unable to find a winner as the game went to penalties.

After the first seven penalties were scored, Sporting goalkeeper Antonio Adan,

who had been excellent over the two legs, kept out Gabriel Martinelli’s effort to help the Portuguese progress.

Manchester United easing through 5-1 on aggregate against Real Betis after a stunning Marcus Rashford strike proved the difference in the second leg.

Erik ten Hag set out his intentions from the get-go, naming a strong starting line-up despite bringing a 4-1 first-leg victory to the Benito Villamarin Stadium.

But The Red Devils were made to work for their place in the last eight, particularly in the first half.

Real Betis started by far the better side and nearly opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Juanmi was played through on David De Gea.

The Spanish forward dragged his effort wide of the mark, but the hosts kept coming and went even closer two minutes later when Joaquin’s long-range effort clipped the outside of the post.

It was end-to-end stuff in the opening period, with De Gea called into action again in the 32nd minute to deny Juanmi and keep the game level.

United did weather the storm slightly and could have gone in at the break ahead after Facundo Pellistri hit the post in added time,

with the rebound somehow evading Wout Weghorst.

The second period began the same way as the first, with the hosts on the front foot,

but Rashford extinguished any lingering hopes the Spanish side had with a magnificent strike from outside the box in the 56th minute to settle the tie once and for all.

rest of the month following a blow against Southampton on the weekend. Antony has also been ruled out through illness.

With a three-goal cushion, Ten Hag will likely take the chance to rest some of his key players including Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw.

Victor Lindelof has shaken off illness to compete for a spot in the defence.

Casemiro should play given he has been handed a four-game domestic ban, which does not apply to the Europa League.

Marcel Sabitzer is also back in training after a knock but he was named in Austria’s international squad on Wednesday, indicating his imminent return fitness.

Arsenal XI vs Sporting: Team News Possible Lineup

Arsenal will welcome Sporting Lisbon to reconvene at the Emirates Stadium for Thursday’s decisive encounter.

Arsenal are without Eddie Nketiah as the english man has been out since the start of this month with an ankle injury and he has not recovered yet.

Arsenal on Nketiah:

“He’s getting better, He’s still in the boot. He’s still a few weeks away and we need to be patient.

It was a nasty injury and he has a big challenge ahead of him.

Thank God it could have been worse. So he’s not in a bad place.”

Arsenal drew the first leg in Lisbon 2-2 last week and Mikel Arteta is expected to name a strong team to book a spot in the quarter-finals.

There is still likely to be some rotation, though, with goalkeeper Matt Turner due to start.

Kieran Tierney, Rob Holding and Takehiro Tomiyasu could come into the defence.

Jorginho should replace Thomas Partey at the base of midfield.

Fabio Vieira is pushing to start after performing well recently.

In attack, Emile Smith Rowe and Reiss Nelson are in contention – but Arteta may look to go strong and rest players once ahead of Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Turner;

Tomiyasu, Holding, Gabriel, Tierney;

Odegaard, Jorginho, Vieira;

Manchester United took a big step towards the last eight of the Europa League,  4-1 win over Real Betis before next week’s second leg in Spain.

After the weekend horror of a 7-0 defeat at Anfield, they’ll be well pleased with their midweek endeavours.

Eager to put their Anfield capitulation behind them, United started well, and quickly went in front,

Marcus Rashford leathering a tremendous rising finish high into the net after skipping around a grounded defender.

But they were unable to force a second and Betis gradually eased themselves into the game, scoring a lovely equaliser through Ayoze Perez, on loan from Leicester.

After the break, though, United stomped onto the gas, Antony scoring his goal with an glorious finish on 52 minutes, then on 58,

Bruno Fernandes met Luke Shaw’s corner with a thunderous header, taking United to the cusp of the quarter-finals.

Wout Weghorst’s finish from close range on 83 minutes for United’s fourth, may well have put the tie beyond Betis.

William Saliba was on target as Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw at Sporting CP in the first leg of their Europa League round-of-16 tie.

The French defender nodded in Fabio Vieira’s corner on 22 minutes to open the scoring and net his third goal for the Gunners.

Mikel Arteta had made six changes to the side that beat Bournemouth in dramatic fashion at the weekend and it showed as the away side lacked tempo, cohesion and rhythm for large spells of the encounter.

The second half was excellent, with both teams really going for it and the match not feeling like the first leg of a tie as the action went end-to-end.

Sporting got their noses in front as Paulinho pounced on a rebound from a Turner save to delight the home fans, but Arsenal levelled again just past the hour, with Hidemasa Morita very unlucky to turn a Granit Xhaka pass into his own goal.

Arsenal will clearly be favourites to progress with the scores level as they prepare for their home leg, but Sporting proved how dangerous they can be and will be a threat again at the Emirates.

It was poor from goalkeeper Matt Turner, on a rare start for the American as he failed to come for the cross, while debutant Jakub Kiwior did not exactly cover himself in glory as he ducked away from the cross.

Manchester United’s reward for knocking out Barcelona in the Europa League is a last 16 clash with Real Betis, while Arsenal meet Sporting Lisbon.

United fight back to defeat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate in their play-off on Thursday evening.

The Gunners skipped the play-off round after topping their group in November.

Sporting Lisbon, their opponents in the round of 16, recorded a draw and a win against Arsenal’s north London rivals

Tottenham in the Champions League earlier this season.

Elsewhere, six-time champions Sevilla play Fenerbahce, Juventus take on Freiburg and Roma meet Real Sociedad.

Arsenal And Manchester United Possible Opponent In The Europa League Last 16.

Arsenal and Manchester United will finally find out who they will face in the Europa League round of 16 today.

The Gunners reached the final of the competition in 2019 but were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea and, at the time, that defeat extended their absence from the Champions League to four consecutive seasons.

After Manchester United seeing off Barcelona at Old Trafford United can now turn their attention to who they will face in the next round, with the in-form Red Devils likely to face a slightly less illustrious opponent.

Gunners can’t face Real Betis, Fenerbahce, Ferencvaros, Feyenoord, Freiburg, Real Sociedad or Union Saint-Gilliose as they are the other seven UEFA Europa League group stage winners.

Furthermore, as per UEFA’s ruling that clubs from the same association cannot be drawn against each other, Mikel Arteta‘s side will avoid an all-Premier League clash against Manchester United.

Meanwhile, there is a curious situation whereby United could face Real Sociedad yet again, with the Spanish side having

topped Group E on goal difference after winning 1-0 at Old Trafford – though they lost the reverse fixture by the same scoreline.
