Manchester United and Barcelona contested a thrilling first-leg draw at the Nou Camp to leave their Europa League play-off tie finely poised.

The chances flowed right from the first minute, with Robert Lewandowski having an early sighter for the hosts,

although his fierce drive was pushed away by David de Gea, while Marc-Andre ter Stegen denied Wout Weghorst at the other end.

The goalkeeper then made an even better save to deny Marcus Rashford and the visitors started to wrestle control of the momentum,

but they were unable to find a breakthrough before half-time, although Jordi Alba came to scoring for Barcelona with a shot that was saved.

Jadon Sancho wasted a golden opening after the interval, skewing wide of the near post when in acres of space,

and United were made to pay minutes later when Marcus Alonso headed the hosts in front.

Rashford ensured the visitors were back on level terms within two minutes though,

thundering a fierce shot past ter Stegen at his near post, before he turned creator, fizzing a low cross into the box that Jules Kounde diverted into his own net.

The hosts were all over the place and looked at risk of conceding every time they were asked to defend,

but they still carried a threat going forward and got an equaliser out of nowhere when Raphinha’s whipped cross crept in at the far post.

Barcelona wanted a penalty late on, after the ball appeared to hit Fred’s arm in the box.

Europa League Play-off Draw In Full

Barcelona and Manchester United headlined the Europa League knockout round play-off draw on Monday.

The two giants of European football will go head to head in the New Year at the Camp Nou

and Old Trafford over two legs for the right to join the likes of Arsenal in the last-16 of the continent’s secondary club competition.

Barcelona dropped into the Europa League for the second successive season in dismal

fashion after finishing third behind Bayern Munich and Inter Milan in a tough Champions League Group D.

Meanwhile, United failed to seal a bye through to the round of 16 despite winning their final group game against Real Sociedad,

finishing behind the Spaniards as runners-up in Group E courtesy of an inferior goal difference.

French side Nantes have the unenviable task of trying to topple Juventus, who finished behind both surprise winners Benfica and fellow giants Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League group.

United boss Erik ten Hag could also have faced a swift reunion with former club Ajax in the knockouts, but instead the Dutch champions will face Bundesliga surprise package Union Berlin.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma, the holders of the Europa Conference League title, are up against Champions League dropouts Red Bull Salzburg,

with Europa League specialists Sevilla battling PSV Eindhoven in an enticing tie.

Arsenal secured their place in the last 16 of the Europa League with a narrow victory over Zurich at Emirates Stadium.

Kieran Tierney’s thumping 20-yard drive into the bottom right corner ensured the hosts advance as Group A winners.

While Arsenal’s margin of victory could have been more significant it proved an ideal night for manager Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard was able to introduce Bukayo Saka after the break to allay any fitness concerns and also rest several key players prior to Sunday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea.

The only complaint was that Arsenal did not put the result beyond doubt during a dominant first-half display in which Eddie Nketiah twice stung the palms of Zurich goalkeeper Yanick Brecher,

and Fabio Vieira saw his goalbound effort blocked from close range.

That ensured a nervy finale with Adrian Guerrero’s left-foot effort ruled out for offside and Ukrainian forward Bogdan Viunnyk seeing his rasping drive just fly wide of the top left corner as the visitors searched for an equaliser.

However, the Gunners held on and have now won all eight of their matches against Swiss clubs in European competition.

Alejandro Garnacho scored an outstanding goal as Manchester United ended Real Sociedad’s flawless Europa League record, but had to settle for second place in Group E.

Erik ten Hag’s side needed to win by two goals or more in Spain to win the group, and their

spirits were lifted when Garnacho showed terrific pace before firing Cristiano Ronaldo’s pass into the corner of the net.

It was a wonderful moment for the 18-year-old Madrid-born winger, who was making his second start for the Red Devils.

Ronaldo missed a great chance to double the lead with a lob on to the roof of the net, before David de Gea produced a fine double save to keep out Andoni Gorosabel and Pablo Marin.

United finish the group stage level on 15 points with Sociedad, who advance to the last 16 with a superior goal difference.

United will now play in next February’s knockout-round play-offs, where they will face one of the teams dropping down from the Champions League.

Teams they could meet over two legs include Barcelona, Juventus, Ajax and Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Portuguese Dropped for last weekend’s trip to Chelsea as punishment for refusing to come on as a substitute against Tottenham eight days ago,

it seemed as though Ronaldo was destined not to score after being handed a starting role by manager Erik ten Hag.

But with nine minutes left, the Portuguese great got his head to a Bruno Fernandes cross.

Sheriff keeper Maxym Koval made a low save but as the ball spilled loose, Ronaldo pounced to complete United’s biggest win of the season

the group and avoid a play-off that could pit them against European heavyweights Barcelona, Juventus or Atletico Madrid.

Mikel Arteta’s side are two points above PSV going into the final round of matches, so they’ll need a win to be sure of finishing first when they face FC Zurich next week.

Joey Veerman’s first-time finish from 16 yards and a header by substitute Luuk de Jong –

after a mistake by keeper Aaron Ramsdale on his European debut – saw Mikel Arteta’s side lose in Europe for the first time this season.

PSV, managed by former Manchester United forward Ruud van Nistelrooy, also had three goals ruled out for offside as Arsenal were well beaten.

The Gunners need to beat Zurich in their final group game next Thursday at Emirates Stadium (20:00 GMT) to guarantee a place in the last 16.

If they fail to win and PSV beat Bodo/Glimt in Norway, Arsenal will face two extra games in the knockout round playoffs,

where teams that finish third in the Champions League group stage, including Barcelona, drop into.
