Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling on a season-long loan deal. The Gunners’ move for the Blues striker has gone to the fore and needs a Premier League transfer fee to be finalized after the English transfer deadline. The England star and Chelsea Sterling have swapped west London for north London and will reunite with Mikel Arteta, with whom he previously worked at Manchester City, at the Emirates Stadium.
The Blues forced Sterling out of the club after he was stripped of his squad number, with manager Enzo Maresca publicly telling the player to find a new team or risk rotting in the reserves. He is expected to spend the rest of the 2024/25 season as part of Arsenal’s title-chasing pack as they look to dethrone former club City from their Premier League throne.Sterling will join Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard as options on the left side of Arsenal’s attack, giving Arteta more depth after losing Eddie Nketiah and Emile Smith Rowe to Crystal Palace and Fulham respectively this summer. He can also provide much needed cover for Bukayo Saka on the right wing.
His move to Arsenal could also offer him the chance to return to the England squad after failing to join his team-mates in Germany during Euro 2024. He was also left out of the squad for the England for international matches.Sterling will not be able to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday but will come in time to face Tottenham Hotspur in their first north London derby after the international break.
