Former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness has taken aim at Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes, questioning his leadership abilities and branding him a “liability” for the Red Devils. Despite his impressive individual stats this season, Fernandes’ role as captain has sparked heated debate among fans and pundits alike.
Fernandes’ Performance and Leadership Under Fire
The 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder has been one of United’s most productive players this season,
contributing six goals and 10 assists in 27 appearances. However, Souness argues that Fernandes’ on-field demeanor and lack of leadership are negatively impacting the team.
Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Souness criticized Fernandes for showing “negativity” and failing to set an example as captain. “From throwing his arms in the air to shrugging his shoulders at teammates—these aren’t the actions you want from your captain,” Souness wrote. “You pick a captain to lead by example, but Fernandes’ behavior sends the wrong message to

young players like Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo, and Alejandro Garnacho.”
The Red Card That Raised Questions
Fernandes’ leadership came under further scrutiny after his third red card of the season during Manchester United’s 2-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Souness believes such incidents reflect poorly on his ability to handle pressure.
“I’ll never forget his reaction during United’s 7-0 loss at Anfield,” Souness recalled. “He walked around pointing fingers and shrugging his shoulders
instead of rallying the team. That lack of mental toughness and discipline is damaging for a club like Manchester United, especially during tough times.”
Concerns About Fernandes’ Future at United
While Fernandes remains a vital player for United, signing a new contract in August that runs until June 2027, speculation surrounds his long-term future at Old Trafford. Reports suggest that United might entertain offers for the Portuguese star, considering his age and potential market value.
Souness, however, acknowledges Fernandes’ undeniable talent, highlighting his 85 goals and 76 assists in 260 appearances for the club. “His ability is unquestionable, but to truly be a top player, he needs to develop mental toughness, discipline, and a stronger work ethic during challenging moments,” Souness concluded.
Should Fernandes Keep the Captain’s Armband?
The debate over Fernandes’ captaincy is intensifying. While he remains one of Manchester United’s most influential players, his leadership style may not align with what the club needs during their current struggles. Some suggest that redistributing the captain’s responsibilities could allow Fernandes to focus on his strengths as a playmaker.
