Manchester City have officially announced the signing of Nico Gonzalez from Porto, with the 23-year-old Spanish midfielder joining the Premier League champions on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

Transfer Details and Contract Information

Gonzalez’s transfer to Manchester City was facilitated by a €60m (£49.9m) release clause in his Porto contract.

The Spain Under-21 international expressed his excitement about joining Pep Guardiola’s squad, stating that he was “honoured” to have been hand-picked by the manager.

“This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career. I am 23 and I want to test myself in England.

There’s no better club than Manchester City for me to do that,” Gonzalez said. “I know the reputation Pep has, and I cannot wait to work with him. I am truly excited.”

Txiki Begiristain, Manchester City’s director of football, acknowledged that negotiations for Gonzalez were challenging but expressed his delight at securing the midfielder’s signature.

“Nico is a very talented young midfielder. He is an ideal acquisition for Manchester City,” Begiristain stated.

Gonzalez’s Background and Playing Style

Gonzalez progressed through Barcelona’s La Masia youth system before joining Porto for £7m in 2023.

He departed Porto with a record of nine goals and nine assists in 68 appearances.

The 6ft 2in midfielder has demonstrated his versatility as an attacking force and a number six, making him an ideal replacement for Rodri while the Ballon d’Or winner recovers from an ACL injury.
