The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has released a statement condemning the “abhorrent” abuse directed towards referee Michael Oliver following Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
Oliver, who was the subject of controversy after sending off Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly for serious foul play, has been targeted by fans online, prompting the PGMOL to take action.
PGMOL Statement
“We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver following the Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal fixture,” the PGMOL said.
“No official should be subject to any form of abuse, let alone the abhorrent attacks aimed at Michael and his family over the past 24 hours.”

Police Investigations Underway
The PGMOL confirmed that the police are aware of the situation and that “a number of investigations have commenced.”
The governing body also expressed its support for Oliver and his family, stating that it is “determined to tackle this unacceptable behaviour.”
Arsenal’s Red Card Woes Continue
The sending-off of Lewis-Skelly was Arsenal’s fourth red card of the Premier League season, more than any other team.
The 18-year-old’s dismissal was for serious foul play, and he will now miss upcoming matches against Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Leicester City.
Debate Surrounds Red Card Decision
While some have questioned the severity of the punishment, replays of the incident show that Lewis-Skelly’s studs were up as he made contact with Wolves’ Matt Doherty.
The VAR room backed up Oliver’s decision, but Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his frustration with the call, stating that he was “absolutely fuming” and hopes to have the decision overturned without an appeal.
