Arsenal’s bid to sign Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams has encountered a significant obstacle, with the Spain international’s substantial wage demands threatening to scupper the deal.
According to reports, Williams is seeking a weekly salary in excess of £300,000, which would make him the highest earner at the Emirates Stadium.
Williams’ Impressive Pedigree
The 22-year-old Williams has already established himself as one of the most exciting young forwards in European football.
He played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, scoring against England in the final, and has been linked with several top clubs, including Barcelona, Manchester United, and Manchester City.
Arsenal’s Interest in Williams
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has identified Williams as his top attacking target, but the club’s hierarchy may baulk at the player’s wage demands.

Williams’ salary requirements would put him ahead of the likes of Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz in the Arsenal pay scale.
Barcelona Still in the Running
Williams turned down the chance to join Barcelona last summer, opting instead to remain with Athletic Bilbao and play in the Europa League.
However, the Catalan club are still believed to be interested in signing him, and Williams’ wage demands may not be a deterrent for the Spanish giants.
Williams’ Brother Insists He Has No Regrets
Inaki Williams, Nico’s brother and teammate at Athletic Bilbao, has insisted that Nico has no regrets about turning down Barcelona.
“He has already said that he is very happy here, very happy at Athletic and that it is the best decision he has made,” Inaki Williams told AS.
