Joel Matip headed the winner as Liverpool came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory at West Ham and boost their outside hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
The visitors started brightly but it was the Hammers who stole in front on 12 minutes when the in-form Lucas Paqueta drove in from the left and flashed a fizzing 25-yard strike beyond Alisson.
Liverpool responded and deservedly levelled when Cody Gakpo netted his sixth goal for the club with a bouncing, low shot that flew into the bottom corner.
Diogo Jota missed two gilt-edged chances to put the away team in front while Michail Antonio went close for David Moyes’ men as the first period concluded in an end-to-end frenzy.
West Ham thought they had restored their advantage on 55 minutes but Jarrod Bowen’s lovely finish was chalked off for offside following a VAR intervention.
As the game wore on Liverpool began to dominate once again and Matip – who was only in the side as a result of an injury to Ibrahima Konate – won it 23 minutes from time with a thumping header from Andy Robertson’s left-wing corner.
