Jamie Carragher Identifies The Chelsea Star Whose Career Is Over Following The Draw Against Manchester City

Jamie Carragher suggests that Thiago Silva’s tenure at Chelsea may be drawing to a close following his overshadowing by younger teammates in the match against Manchester City.

Silva’s departure from the field due to injury during the previous Monday night’s game against Crystal Palace, coupled with his absence for the City game, raises questions about his future.

Despite being sidelined for the City clash, there’s a possibility Silva could recover in time for the Carabao Cup final.

This sequence of events prompts speculation about his ongoing role and contribution to the Chelsea squad,

especially considering the emergence of younger talents vying for positions in the team.

Certain supporters may prefer the 39-year-old not to feature against Liverpool following the impressive performance by centre-back duo Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill at the Etihad.

Their solid defensive display contributed significantly to the Blues securing a point against Pep Guardiola’s side, despite Raheem Sterling opening the scoring in the first half, with Rodri netting a late equalizer.

Disasi especially earned acclaim for his efforts, with Carragher naming him player of the match and likening the 25-year-old to Chelsea legend John Terry.

Silva is of course one of the best defenders of his generation, and has been a fantastic player for the Blues since moving to Stamford Bridge in 2020, and was even voted the club’s Player of the Year last season.

However, he has not looked 100% this season, yet Mauricio Pochettino has continued to rely on him, with the Brazilian playing nearly every single minute of the Premier League campaign.

But Liverpool legend Carragher believes his time is now up, saying on Sky Sports:

‘Last couple of big away games going back to Aston Villa in the [FA] Cup and here today when Thiago Silva has not been involved.

‘He’s been brilliant for Chelsea since he’s come in.

But I think with his age, his contract’s up at the end of the season and when you see those two players [Disasi and Colwill] in together…

‘I think it makes it very difficult for Thiago Silva to come back into the team between now and the end of the season – unless someone gets injured.

‘Chelsea have the cup final but I certainly think they have to start building something for the future. There’s not an awful lot to play for after the cup final.

‘I think looking at those two in a partnership and maybe another young centre-back in the squad, the days of Thiago Silva playing at Chelsea have got to come to an end.’
