Lionel Messi’s World Cup-winning shirts for Argentina are up for sale in the largest sports memorabilia auction ever, with a price tag exceeding £8 million.

Sotheby’s has revealed plans for an auction featuring six out of the seven jerseys worn by the 36-year-old Lionel Messi during last winter’s Qatar matches.

This anticipated auction of sports memorabilia could set a new record, with bidders expected to pay over £8 million for these kits.

All six jerseys were worn by Messi in the World Cup’s initial halves, notably during his final’s penalty goal as Argentina triumphed over France.

Interested buyers can view these iconic kits at a free exhibition in Sotheby’s New York headquarters from November 30 to December 14, coinciding with the bidding dates.

A portion of the profits will go to the UNICAS Project led by Barcelona children’s hospital Sant Joan de Jeu, in the fight against rare diseases affecting children.

In September 2022, the record for the highest auction price of a game-worn piece of sports memorabilia was set at £8.1 million when Michael Jordan‘s jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals was sold.

Additionally, last year, Diego Maradona‘s iconic ‘Hand of God’ shirt from Argentina’s 1986 World Cup quarter-final victory against England fetched £7.45 million.
