Antony: I Lived In The Favela 20 Yards Away From Drug Dealers

Manchester United summer signing Antony has discussed about his rough upbringing in Brazil.

The talented winger made his Old Trafford move from Ajax in exchange for 100 million euros and it took him just 35 minutes to find the back of the net in his debut against Arsenal.

Antony joined Sao Paulo’s youth academy at the age of just 10 years old back in 2010 and, after a decade, he signed for the Eredivisie champions.

Antony:

“I was just a humble little boy from a favela.”

“I didn’t have boots to play football. I didn’t have a bedroom, I slept on the sofa.

“I lived in the very middle of the favela. Twenty yards from my house there were drug dealers.

“Sometimes you would be watching a game on a Sunday and there would be that smell, a smell of cannabis coming into the house.

“There were moments when my brother, my sister and I would cry and hug each other thinking about our lives.

“There were times in the middle of the night, we were bailing water out of our flooded house, but we’d still do it with a smile on our faces.”

Antony on his first goal for Man Utd

“When I saw the net bulge and the fans on their feet cheering, it was very emotional.”

“I had goosebumps. That goal was for my family and the fans.”

Manchester United Verbally Agree €100m Deal For Ajax Winger Antony

Manchester United have reached a verbal agreement worth €100m (£84m) with Ajax for the transfer of Antony.

The Red Devils have been eager to reunite Erik ten Hag with the 22-year-old all summer long, but have been unable to thrash out a deal with the Eredivisie giants.

Ajax have rejected three bids from United, the latest of which was worth around €90m,

but a breakthrough has been made in talks between the two clubs – with Antony now closing in on the move to Old Trafford that he has been desperate to make.

Antony was left out of Ajax’s squad to face Utrecht on Sunday.

Manager Alfred Schreuder said in his pre-match interview that ‘nothing had changed’ in negotiations between the two clubs –

indicating that United hadn’t offered to pay the club-record fee the Amsterdam-based giants have been seeking.

But United haven’t given up on their pursuit of Antony – with Ten Hag clear that signing the Brazilian is his number one priority –

and sources have confirmed  that a verbal agreement has been reached with Ajax

although there are still a few details to sort out. United now have just under a week to finalise terms before the summer transfer window closes.

Antony’s arrival would be a huge boost to Manchester United.
