The South American supporters had been on their feet singing all game and they had further delight when Julian Alvarez punished Mat Ryan’s mistake to double their advantage.

Australia had offered very little but surprisingly pulled one back with 13 minutes remaining when substitute Craig Goodwin’s strike took a huge deflection off Enzo Fernandez.

They could have levelled shortly after through Aziz Behich, whose incredible solo run took him past four players, but his shot was superbly blocked by Lisandro Martinez’s sliding challenge as Argentina edged through.

Australia held on to a narrow first-half lead to pick up a crucial victory over Tunisia that keeps alive their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup last 16.

Knowing defeat would see them make an early exit from the competition, Graham Arnold’s side came out of the blocks full of energy and intent.

Mitchell Duke took advantage of their positive start when he superbly flicked Craig Goodwin‘s cross into the far corner to put them 1-0 up after 23 minutes.

That sparked an outburst of jubilant celebration from the small contingent of Australia fans behind the goal, which momentarily silenced the hostile and unwavering support for Tunisia.

Hissed and jeered throughout by striking clusters of Tunisia fans draped in red at the Al Janoub Stadium,

Australia held their nerve to claim their first victory at a World Cup since 2010.

They survived a desperate onslaught from Tunisia in the second half,

with Youssef Msakni forcing goalkeeper Mathew Ryan into a save at his near post,

though that came moments after Mathew Leckie had come inches away from connecting with Goodwin’s cross at the other end.

Stoke City defender Harry Souttar put in a superb performance, making several key blocks and tackles as Australia dug in.

Australia, who suffered a humbling defeat by France in their opening match,

will take on tough opponents Denmark next – but with qualification in their own hands.

Tunisia vs Australia XI: Team News, Possible Lineup

Wahbi Khazri is pushing for a start as Tunisia face Australia in their second Group D clash.

The 31-year-old, who has played for Sunderland in the past, was an unused substitute in the opening draw with Denmark, but could come into the side in what is a crucial match for both teams.

Khazri is second on the list of Tunisia’s all-time leading goalscorers, offering a threat that is badly needed judging by his country’s opening 90 minutes at the World Cup.

Hannibal Mejbri, the Manchester United midfielder currently on loan at Birmingham,

did come off the bench against Denmark and is likely to have to settle for another cameo, with Tunisia having no injury concerns.

It’s a similar story for Australia, with no fitness problems picked up in their opening clash against France.

They took the lead against the defending champions, but were eventually blown away by Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud.

This is a far more realistic opportunity to pick up points, and Aaron Mooy will be relied on to control things in midfield should he start as expected.

Mitchell Duke will likely lead the line, while Craig Goodwin, who put Australia in front against Les Blues, has surely done enough to keep his place on the left wing.

Hearts full-back Nathaniel Atkinson struggled, understandably, against Mbappe and was

replaced in the second-half, but should still keep his place for what he will hope will be an easier 90 minutes.

Predicted Tunisia XI:

Dahmen;

Bronn, Meriah, Talbi, Drager;

Skhiri, Laidouni, Abdi;

Khazri, Msakni, Jebali

Predicted Australia XI:

Ryan,

Atkinson, Souttar, Rowles, Behich;

Mooy, Irvine, Leckie;

McGree, Goodwin, Duke
