Erling Haaland scored his second hat-trick in five days as Manchester City cruised into the FA Cup semi-finals by hammering Championship leaders Burnley at Etihad Stadium.

Haaland followed his five-goal haul against RB Leipzig in the Champions League by claiming another three to take his tally for the season to 42.

The Norwegian is now just two short of the record jointly held by Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mohamed Salah for the most goals for an English top-flight club in all competitions in the Premier League era.

Julian Alvarez added two goals and substitute Cole Palmer also scored on a sobering night for former City skipper Vincent Kompany, whose Burnley side have surged 13 points clear at the top of the Championship.

Burnley did well in the first half but could not match Haaland’s staggering efficiency in front of goal.

City opened up in the second period though, underlining the chasm in class between England’s top two divisions.

It will be City’s sixth semi-final appearance in seven seasons under Pep Guardiola,

and on this form few will argue against them lifting the trophy for only the second time in that period as they retain hopes of completing a Treble-winning campaign.

2022/23 FA Cup Quarter-Final Draw

Manchester United and Manchester City avoided each in the FA Cup quarter-final draw, which was made following the last of the fifth round ties on Wednesday night.

Manchester United will play Fulham in the FA Cup quarter-final, while Manchester City will host Burnley.

United secured their place in the last eight of the competition with a 3-1 victory over West Ham at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Fulham, meanwhile, are rewarded with a trip to Old Trafford following their 2-0 win over Leeds United on Tuesday.

When asked about the prospect of playing Fulham in the FA Cup quarter-final, United manager Erik ten Hag said:

‘Difficult.

‘They are playing really well. We have to play really well to win that game.’

Elsewhere, Vincent Kompany will return to his former club as his Burnley side, who lead the way in the Championship, will play Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Grimsby Town pulled off a major shock on Wednesday night as they dumped Southampton out of the competition at St Mary’s with a 2-1 win.

'Wout Weghorst Belongs Entirely To Beşiktaş' Besiktas Respond After Rejecting Man Utd’s Weghorst Approach

Besiktas turn down the compensation package on Wout Weghorst offer that lead to in doubt for Manchester United in getting the Dutchman star.

‘The claim that there is an exit clause in our football player’s contract, stating that his contract can be terminated with a

compensation of 2.5 million Euros in case of an offer from the Premier League, is fictitious.’

‘However, the news that the player in question will leave the team on Tuesday is completely untrue.

The initiative regarding Wout Weghorst belongs entirely to Beşiktaş.

If there is a development on this issue, the information will be shared.’

This come after Besiktas turned down a financial offer from Burnley, which was designed to release Weghorst from his six-month loan deal at the Turkish club.

Weghorst joined Burnley less than 12 months ago for a fee of £12m but he scored just twice in 20 appearances for the Clarets.

The Dutchman has rediscovered his best form in Istanbul, scoring nine times in 19 appearances for Besiktas this term.

United are willing to pay Burnley a fee – which will be passed on to Besiktas – in order to secure Weghorst for the remainder of the campaign.

The Dutchman is keen on a move to Old Trafford and said goodbye to supporters after Besiktas’ league win on Saturday.

Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford strike were enough for Manchester United to progress to quater in a 2-0 win over Burnley

Erik ten Hag named five players who featured at the World Cup in the starting XI including Christian Eriksen who opened the scoring after 27 minutes.

Bruno Fernandes picked out Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the United full-back – making a

rare start – was at full stretch to hook it back across the face of goal and leave Eriksen with a tap-in. It was Wan-Bissaka’s first assist since May 2021.

United survived a couple of nervy moments from stand-in goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, and at the opposite end, Bailey Peacock-Farrell was

alert to keep out efforts from Alejandro Garnarcho and Anthony Martial.

There was nothing Peacock-Farrell could do about Rashford’s goal, which came 12 minutes after the restart.

Picking the ball up in his own half, he embarked on a menacing run before hammering a shot emphatically into the bottom corner.

Ashley Barnes spurned a huge chance for Burnley to halve the deficit, as visiting manager Vincent Kompany’s return to Old Trafford ended in defeat.

Vincent Kompany Appointed New Burnley Manager

Burnley have confirmed the appointment of former Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany as their new first-team manager.

The Clarets made the controversial decision to part ways with Sean Dyche towards the end of last season, and while caretaker boss Mike Jackson did well in his short time in charge, he was unable to lead them to Premier League safety.

Jackson has now stepped down from his role, with Kompany leaving his post at Anderlecht for a return to the country in which he spent 11 years with City between 2008 and 2019.

“Burnley Football Club is a truly historic English side and it is an honour to be appointed first-team manager,” said Kompany.

“I’m excited by the challenge ahead.

“I’m looking forward to getting to work with the players and creating a positive, winning team for our fans when we return to Turf Moor.

“I’ve been impressed by the Board’s vision for the club which aligns with my own and I look forward to playing my part as we enter an important season.”

Burnley chairman Alan Pace said:

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Vincent to Burnley Football Club.

“Vincent is a proven leader and I’ve been very impressed with his ideas for Burnley Football Club, his appetite to succeed and his focus on leading the Club back to the Premier League.

“Vincent has shown impressive credentials in leading one of Belgium’s biggest teams back to

European football and a Cup Final last season and we’ve been excited by his philosophy, approach and ambition for the Club.”

Chelsea cruise to victory in their first Premier League game since owner Roman Abramovich said he will sell the club.

Manager Thomas Tuchel admitted news of the Russian billionaire’s decision had been as distraction,

but his side did not show it at Turf Moor thanks to two goals from Kai Havertz,

sandwiched between Reece James’ opener and Christian Pulisic’s close-range finish.

Burnley will rue missed opportunities when the scores were level as they fell to a second successive defeat to remain in the relegation zone.

Just after the half-hour mark, the hosts squandered a great chance.

Ashley Westwood’s looped cross was misjudged by Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy, who only punched as far as Dwight McNeil.

Somehow, with the goal gaping, he managed to shoot over the bar.

Chelsea had plenty of possession in the first half, but little cutting edge; Nick Pope was barely tested in the Burnley goal.

Almost immediately after the restart, though, James edged into a crowded area and kept his cool to fire emphatically across Pope.

Chelsea were soon three up and in total control. First, Pulisic‘s pinpoint cross was guided home expertly by Havertz, before the German bundled Jake’s cross over the line.

Pulisic got in on the act 21 minutes from time, rounding off what turned out to be a comfortable afternoon for Chelsea.

Player Ratings: Burnley 1-1 Man Utd, Rangnick Sides Slump To Frustrating Draw

Turf Moor hosted a tale of two halves on Tuesday evening, with Manchester United and Burnley both sharing the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Man United had the ball in the back of the net shortly after ten minutes, but Raphael Varane’s header was chalked off after VAR spotted an offside Harry Maguire blocking Jay Rodriguez in the build-up.

However, Man United did eventually take the lead 18 minutes in.

Paul Pogba was left alone in the box and, when picked out by Luke Shaw, rifled the ball into the roof of the net with no hesitation.

The ball was in the back of the Burnley net once again just minutes later, but that was also written off for a controversial foul from Pogba.

Edinson Cavani, starting ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, had a great chance to grab that second on the half-hour mark, but a glorious save from Nick Pope at point-blank range kept the score at 1-0 heading into the break.

It took Burnley just two minutes of the second half to equalise.

Wout Weghorst got the better of Harry Maguire and slipped in Jay Rodriguez, who flashed his composure to strike past David de Gea and tie things up.

Burnley really grew into the game after that and could have easily had one or two more.

Weghorst was a real problem and Rodriguez wasted a superb counter attack, with United struggling to keep up at times.

Cristiano Ronaldo came on to try and save the day, but he wasted a perfect chance to do exactly that.

He found himself alone in the box with ten minutes to go but somehow sent his header over the bar.

Both sides continued to push for a winner, with Ronaldo fluffing his lines once again.

Weghorst looked particularly dangerous and tested De Gea more than once, but ultimately, a draw seemed a fair result.

Burnley player ratings

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Nick Pope (GK) – 7/10 – Slipped over with every clearance he made but managed a handful of decent saves to keep the score down.

Connor Roberts (RB) – 5/10 – Absolutely battered by Sancho and Shaw.

Looked terrified and didn’t do nearly enough for the opening goal. Improved after the break.

James Tarkowski (CB) – 7/10 – An unconvincing first half but thrived after the break when asked to make headers and scrappy clearances. The Burnley way.

Ben Mee (CB) – 6/10 – Blushes were spared for one of the disallowed goals, but saved what looked like a certain goal later in the game.

Erik Pieters (LB) – 6/10 – Did a decent job of dealing with Rashford.

Even went on a one-man counter attack that he ruined with the worst pass imaginable.

2. Midfielders

Dwight McNeil (RM) – 3/10 – Looks totally wasted on the right. Couldn’t get into the game at all.

Josh Brownhill (CM) – 6/10 – Chasing Pogba’s shadow for the majority of the first half but really stepped it up in the second. Controlled the midfield battle at times.

Kieran Westwood (CM) – 4/10 – Played some aimless through balls that were never going to lead to anything.

Maxwel Cornet (LM) – 5/10 – Got in some really nice positions but put in some aimless crosses. Struggled to find his man.

3. Forwards

Wout Weghorst (ST) – 7/10 – Made the difference when dropping deeper.

Span Maguire once he figured out how to make an impact. Really impressive once he started getting involved more.

Jay Rodriguez (ST) – 6/10 – A thoroughly disappointing first half but redeemed himself with a nice goal to tie things up.

4. Substitutes

Aaron Lennon (LM) – 5/10.

Ashley Barnes (ST) – N/A.

Man Utd player ratings

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

David de Gea (GK) – 6/10 – Made a nice save to deny Weghorst after the break.

Diogo Dalot (RB) – 7/10 – Another excellent performance. Growing in confidence with every game.

Harry Maguire (CB) – 3/10 – A strange decision to block Rodriguez for Varane’s disallowed goal,

and an even stranger decision not to track Weghorst for the equaliser. Could have easily seen red for a last-man challenge.

Raphael Varane (CB) – 6/10 – Took his disallowed goal well and didn’t deserve to see it struck off.

Luke Shaw (LB) – 7/10 – Looked so in sync with Sancho down the left. Attacked with real menace and tormented Burnley’s defence.

6. Midfielders

Paul Pogba (DM) – 6/10 – A really impressive first half but saw his influence fade after the break.

Scott McTominay (DM) – 4/10 – Struggled up against Weghorst’s physicality and looked uncomfortable sitting deep. Didn’t have the defensive awareness.

Marcus Rashford (RM) – 4/10 – Looked a little scared at times.

Got into a lot of nice positions but constantly made the wrong decisions. Not on it.

Bruno Fernandes (AM) – 5/10 – Not on the same wavelength as his opponents, probably his fault. His passes were going nowhere.

Jadon Sancho (LM) – 7/10 – Very impressive going forwards. Tormented Roberts and really looked up for it.

7. Forward

Edinson Cavani (ST) – 3/10 – Preferred to Ronaldo for his willingness to press, he did pretty much nothing. Couldn’t get into the game at all.

8. Substitutes

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) – 5/10

Jesse Lingard (AM) – 5/10

Anthony Elanga (RM) – N/A

Manchester United tumbled out of the Premier League’s top four as Jay Rodriguez’s first goal in 50 league games earned bottom club Burnley a precious point at Turf Moor.

For the second game running, United dominated the play and had most of the chances, with Paul Pogba putting them ahead with his first goal of the season.

But just as against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup, the visitors were made to pay for their profligacy.

On this occasion, they had two first-half goals disallowed, while Nick Pope made excellent saves to deny Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Raphael Varane.

In contrast, Burnley made the most of their brief spell in the ascendency at the start of the second period,

as Rodriguez ran onto Wout Weghorst‘s through-ball to score his 100th career league goal.

It means United drop to fifth, with the three teams below them all capable of catching them if they win their games in hand.

Burnley are four points from safety, but are three unbeaten, even if their run without a win now extends to 10 matches.

Manchester United scored three first-half goals for the first time in the Premier League since January as they swept Burnley aside at Old Trafford to move back into the top six.

Scott McTominay’s eighth-minute curler from the edge of the area was United’s quickest top-flight goal since the Scot scored twice in the opening minutes against Leeds more than 12 months ago.

Jadon Sancho’s deflected effort doubled the hosts’ advantage before Cristiano Ronaldo – who had wasted a glorious chance after being sent clean through when the game was still goalless – tapped into an empty net after McTominay’s shot had been touched on to a post by Burnley keeper Wayne Hennessey.

Aaron Lennon took advantage of a poor first touch from Eric Bailly to pull one back for the visitors with a clinical finish into the bottom corner.

However, in their first game since 12 December, Burnley lacked the stamina or the guile to trouble United further and remain in the bottom three.

The victory extends United’s unbeaten run since the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to eight matches.

Although as they are only two points closer to the top of the league than the bottom, they still have some way to go if they are to start to create a meaningful legacy to the feats of Sir Alex Ferguson, who celebrates his 80th birthday on New Year’s Eve.
