Raphael Varane makes surprise move to Como

French international defender Raphael Varane has signed a two-year contract with newly-promoted Serie A side Como, the club announced on Sunday.

The deal includes an option to extend, marking a new chapter in Varane’s career after leaving Manchester United.

The former Real Madrid star who had spent the last three years at Manchester United, arrives as a free agent.

“Raphael is a special player and his signing is proof of the ambition we have for this club,” new Como manager Cesc Fabregas said.

Varane’s arrival adds to the growing list of Premier League players joining the Italians ahead of the season, including former Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina and defender Alberto Moreno.

Como hired Fabregas earlier in July after the former Spain midfielder helped the club earn promotion last season as an assistant.

Cesc Fabregas and Thierry Henry, former Arsenal teammates and football legends, have a stake in Como’s future as minority shareholders.

With Raphael Varane joining the team, Fabregas and Henry’s vision for the club’s growth and competitiveness in Serie A takes a significant step forward.
