Nigeria had it! Kenneth Omeruo’s header was well saved by the goalkeeper.

the two-man attack of Victor Osimhen and Terem Moffi is not dovetailing well, and with the home team chasing an equaliser, a player like Kelechi Iheanacho to put the ball in front of Osimhen to make hay.

Three Finalist: Salah, Mane And Mendy Ready To Battle For African Footballer Of The Year

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the three finalists that will battle it out for the 2022 African Football of the Year award.

One of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Edouard Mendy will be the winner at the gala scheduled for July 21 in the Moroccan city of Rabat.

The two strikers are the favourites to take the award, as Salah and Mane were key players for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Both men won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, while also finishing runners-up to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

They also finished runners-up in the Premier League, losing the title to Manchester City on the final day of the season.

Mane’s bid is aided by the fact that he helped Senegal defeat Salah’s Egypt in the 2022 Africa Cup of National final.

The Lions of Teranga came out on top in a penalty shootout, in which Mendy proved instrumental.

However, despite being the first-choice goalkeeper for Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, the 30-year-old didn’t achieve as much club success as his rivals.

Chelsea lost the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals to Mane and Salah’s Liverpool, while their Premier League challenge fell short after a strong start to the season.

Other awards

The CAF will also hand out awards for Goal of the Year, African team, National team, Coach, Young Player, Interclub Player and Player of the Year for both men and women.

Match-fixing Investigation Launched As 187 Goals Scored Across Two Games In Sierra Leone

Two first division football matches in Sierra Leone after being investigated after a remarkable 187 goals were scored.

Kahunla Rangers and Gulf FC were both vying to join East End Lions in the Premier League, and Gulf FC boasted the better goal difference so just had to match Kahunla’s result.

They failed, however, despite beating Koquima Lebanon 91-1 as Kahunla ran out 95-0 winners over Lumbebu United in the promotion playoffs.

Both teams enjoyed fruitful second halves, with Gulf FC only 7-1 to the good at half-time while Kahunla had scored just two of their 95 goals before the break.

“We can’t stand by and see an embarrassing situation like this go unpunished,” SLFA president Thomas Daddy Brima told BBC Sport Africa.

“We’re going to launch an immediate investigation and bring to book all those responsible for this mediocrity.

“All those found guilty will be dealt with in accordance with the SLFA laws, and will also be handed over to the country’s anti-corruption commission.”

The latest round of suspicious results come just a month after two promotion-chasing matches in South Africa were found to have been fixed.

Tigers wiped the smiles off Happy Boys’ faces with a 33-1 win as Matiyasi clipped Mighty Birds’ wings with a 59-1 trouncing.

Samuel Eto’o Sentenced To 22 Months In Prison For Tax Fraud In Spain

Samuel Eto’o has been handed a 22-month prison sentence and seven-figure fine after admitting tax fraud worth over £3.25million in Spain.

On Monday, the former Chelsea and Cameroon striker was sentenced after a trial for

defrauding the Spanish authorites of his image rights income while a Barcelona player between 2006 and 2009.

A total of 3,872,621 euros (£3,330,514) was not properly declared by Eto’o, 41.

A Barcelona court handed down a 22-month sentence for Eto’o, which will be suspended because he does not hold a criminal record

and the period is under two years. He will also pay a fine of 1,810,310 euros (£1,556,894).

His agent, Jose Maria Mesalles, was also found guilty and will pay a 905,155 euro fine (£778,447).

Mesalles was sentenced to one year in prison, which in practice will also be suspended.

Prosectuors had originally demanded both serve four years and six months.

Eto’o is quoted by Marca as saying outside of court:

“I recognise the facts and I am going to pay, but for the record I was a child then and I always did what I was told to do.”

Earnings that should have been declared for income tax were instead hidden in the accounts of two companies, situated in Spain and Hungary.

The earnings diverted to Hungary paid no tax while that directed across Spain did so at a lower rate than the personal income tax rate.

A third defendant, Jesus Lastre, who administrated the Hungarian company used to divert earnings, was acquitted.

Mohamed Salah Has 'Done Nothing' With Egypt, Says Ex-Pharaohs Coach

Mohamed Salah has achieved nothing with Egypt and must give more to his national team’s cause, according to ex-Pharaohs coach Hassan Shehata.

Shehata, who took charge of Egypt between 2004-11 and led them to the AFCON 2006 title,

did not mince his words when considering Salah’s contribution to his country in recent years.

Salah most recently suffered a painful AFCON final defeat to Senegal in February and then lost

to the same opposition in March as his side’s World Cup qualification dream went up in smoke.

And Shehata believes Egypt’s talisman must step up if they are to land silverware once again.

Speaking to Sada al-Balad, Shehata said:

“We all know that Salah is one of the stars of the world and not just one of the stars of Egypt.

The awards he took and the goals he scored give him the right to be the top star.

“But technically – and I’m sorry to say this – Salah has done nothing with the national team.

He should have done much better than he has. He must provide more when he plays for his country.

“It’s true [that there is a difference in quality between Liverpool and Egypt].

He should have said this to the officials here – although he is not the one who chooses the players – but he should’ve said that the players here are not like the players in England.”

Shehata went on to explain that he feels Salah is regularly man-marked by up to three defenders when on international duty,

and that the team’s coaches need to help him be effective.

He said:

“The coaches have to find a way to open the space for him.

“We must find players to help him appear properly in the pitch.”

Meanwhile, Salah’s future as a Liverpool player continues to be uncertain.

The 30-year-old is out of contract next summer and is yet to agree an extension to his current contract.

It is believed that Salah’s wage demands would require Liverpool to break their wage structure, and as such an impasse has been reached.

As it stands – and as reported by the Liverpool Echo – that situation remains the same, with club insiders said to currently have “no expectation regarding Salah’s future one way or the other”.

Victor Osimhen scored four goals as Nigeria thrashed minnows Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

It marks the Super Eagles’ biggest ever victory in international football.

Nigeria, who surprisingly missed out on a place at the World Cup in Qatar, completed the record rout thanks to seven second-half goals as

Terem Moffi (two), Moses Simon, Peter Etebo, Ademola Lookman and Emmanuel Dennis also got on the scoresheet.

The defeat – which was held in the neutral location of Agadir in Morocco – is not the heaviest in Sao Tome’s history, that was an 11-0 loss to Congo in 1976.

The win means Nigeria have a full haul of six points from their opening two games as they seek to reach the continental finals in Ivory Coast next June.

The top two teams in each pool qualify, with Sierra Leone to meet Guinea-Bissau in the other game in the group on Monday.

Nigeria flattered to deceive in their AFCON qualifier win over Sierra Leone on Thursday.

The Super Eagles struggled in the early stages and Victor Osimhen started the game looking isolated as Moses Simon

and Samuel Chukwueze buzzed around ineffectively too far away from him, with the long balls from the Nigerian defence failing to find the Napoli forward.

While the home side dominated the ball, the kind of defensive frailty that cost them at the Africa Cup of Nations in January was all too obvious.

After every turn over, Sierra Leone looked dangerous and even John Morsay’s 11th minute opener failed to serve as a warning.

Minutes later, the away side would hit the post after yet another break and the Nigerian defence looked shambolic.

Ultimately, however, individual quality paid off.

Alex Iwobi combined well with Moses Simon before placing a lovely shot across goal to level the scores before Osimhen would fire home a winner five minutes before half-time.

Chukwueze was guilty of missing a brilliant chance to wrap the game up but Jose Peseiro’s reign in charge would get off to a winning – if unconvincing – start.

Ziyech Vows 'He Will Not Return To National Team' As He Decided To Quit Morroco Duty.

Former Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech has  decided to quit international football for good after a falling-out with Morocco coach Vahid Halilhodzic.

The 28-year-old has not played for the Atlas Lions since June last year, and was omitted from the squad for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Since featuring against Ghana and Burkina Faso last June Ziyech has been involved in a war of words with Bosnian Halilhodzic regarding his availability for international duty.

The Chelsea winger  missed all six group-stage fixtures in Morocco’s World Cup qualifying campaign,

and it appears Halilhodzic does not intend to select Ziyech for the two-legged play-off against the Democratic Republic of Congo for a spot in Qatar next month.

Morocco, who are looking to qualify for a second successive World Cup, were beaten quarter-finalists at the Nations Cup in Cameroon.

Ziyech:

I will not return to the national team, and this is my final decision.”

“I am focussing on what I am doing with my club.”

“Everyone has seen what happened in the last period.”

“I am sad but this is my final decision.

“The coach of the national team made his decision, and in any case I respect it.

My focus now, as I said, is only on Chelsea.”

Ziyech is with the Blues in Abu Dhabi as the Premier League club prepare to face Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in the semi-finals of the Club World Cup on Wednesday.

He was born in the Netherlands and represented them at youth international level, but switched allegiance to Morocco in 2015.

He won 39 caps for the North Africans and scored 17 goals.

Sadio Mane Updates Grom Hospital After Suffering Concussion

Liverpool Winger Sadio Mane has posted an update from hospital after he suffered a concussion during Senegal’s AFCON round of 16 victory over Cape Verde.

On the hour mark, Mane raced onto a long ball and collided with opposing goalkeeper Vozinha.

The Liverpool forward appeared to lose consciousness in the air and took a heavy landing, with the Cape Verde stopper being sent off for the offence following a VAR review.

The injury did not seem to affect Mane too dramatically as he recovered to open the scoring just after the hour mark with a strike that clipped the bar on its way in.

After the game he was taken to hospital for checks, where he posted a positive update on his condition.

Mane:

“Everything is fine, thank you all for the messages,” , posing for a photo with Vozinha, who was also being assessed.

This update came after his manager, Aliou Cisse, had expressed doubts over his condition.

Sadio had a big shock with the goalkeeper and I haven’t heard from him yet, he was dizzy and he is currently in the hospital,” Senegal head coach Cisse said after the final whistle.

“We will have news later. I hope he is doing very well.”

Senegal went on to win the game 2-0 and will now face the winner of Mali vs Equatorial Guinea in the quarter-finals.

Depending on how far his nation progresses, Mane could be available for Liverpool‘s FA Cup meeting with Cardiff, which takes place on Sunday 6 February – the same day as the AFCON final.
