South Africa secured third place at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in the Ivory Coast by defeating the DR Congo 6-5 on penalties following a goalless draw.
In the penalty shootout, South Africa midfielder Teboho Mokoena hit the outside of the post with the first kick.
However, the following eight efforts from both teams were all successful, leading to Congo DR captain Chancel Mbemba needing to score to win the contest.

South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made a crucial save on Mbemba’s effort, extending the shootout into sudden death.
Williams continued his heroics by saving once more, this time from Meschak Elia, securing the victory for South Africa.
No additional time was allotted in the bronze medal match, where the Congolese dominated despite their struggles in front of the goal.
Silas Katompa had two glaring opportunities to give them the lead.
The first came in the eighth minute when he found himself free on the left with only Williams to beat, but his hesitation allowed the keeper to snatch the ball at his feet.
Midway through the second half, Williams dropped a high ball in his box without any pressure.
Katompa had another straightforward chance but ended up shooting into the side netting.
With fifteen minutes remaining, Congo DR striker Simon Banza also had a clear sight on goal but failed to convert his effort from point-blank range.
Substitute Fiston Mayele showed skill in controlling a long ball with his chest and getting past his marker to create an opportunity.
However, his effort in the 89th minute missed the target as it went across the face of the goal.
