Gerrard was appointed less than 12 months ago after impressing with Rangers in Scotland.

Club statement:

“We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”

A dismal showing at Craven Cottage saw Villa go down 3-0 having had a player sent off,

another score an own goal and a third concede a penalty, leaving the club teetering above the relegation zone with just two wins after 11 games.

Gerrard told reporters after the game:

“We’ll see what happens — I’m a fighter, I will never ever quit anything.

Quitting is not in my DNA. But the reality is that it’s not good enough for this club.” Less than an hour later, he was sacked.

An early favourite to take over is former Tottenha manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has reportedly been made the club’s top target as the club’s wealthy owners prepare to splash the cash to lure a top coach.

Mason Mount strikes twice to steal the show  as Chelsea defeated Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa Park.

The loose heap the more pressure on the under-fire Steven Gerrard.

Chelsea were gifted an early lead after just six minutes to Villa’s dismay, as Tyrone Mings misjudged a headed clearance,

and Mason Mount was in the right place at the right time to latch onto the loose ball and slot it home from inside the box to give the visitors an early advantage.

Villa did not let their heads drop, and for the remainder of the first half, they looked the more

threatening side as they registered a total of 11 attempts, with six of them on target.

The pick of their chances fell to Leon Bailey after 14 minutes, but his close-range header came back off the crossbar.

Kepa Arrizabalaga then kept Chelsea ahead on the half-hour mark with a world-class save to deny Danny Ings, tipping the striker’s header over the bar from point-blank range.

The woodwork was found again just before the break as Raheem Sterling’s curling effort from inside the penalty area rattled against the bar.

However, Chelsea were the side to get the second goal as Mount secured his brace with a

superbly struck free-kick from 25 yards out in the 65th minute to seal an important win for the visitors

Chelsea XI vs Aston Villa: Team News Possible Lineup

Graham Potter will be without Reece James’  as Chelsea prepare for a trip to face Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa.

The England defender came off with a knee injury at AC Milan and will now be assessed by a specialist amid concerns that he could be out for several weeks and require surgery.

James could even miss selection for England’s upcoming World Cup campaign in Qatar with N’Golo Kante also likely to miss to France’s tournament.

Furthermore, Wesley Fofana has been ruled out until after the World Cup, leaving Chelsea without three major players.

Without James on Sunday, the Blues will likely move into a back four and look for attacking impetus elsewhere on the pitch.

Chelsea had already been accustomed to coping without Kante and Fofana ahead of a busy period in the Premier League – with Brentford and Manchester United to come next week.

Kepa Arrizabalaga will likely continue to in goal with Kalidou Koulibaly increasingly forcing his way into the team in recent weeks.

Trevoh Chalobah might make way for Cesar Azpilicueta to help move into a back four.

Kai Havertz could come in for James in a roundabout solution to Chelsa’s attacking needs after a formation adjustment.

Predicted Chelsea XI:

Azpilicueta, Koulibaly, Silva, Cucurella;

Mount, Jorginho, Kovacic;

Havertz, Aubameyang, Sterling.

Gabriel Martinelli hit the late winner as Arsenal dug deep to down Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Arsenal, backed by a vociferous Emirates Stadium, set about maintaining their 100 per-cent winning record with gusto,

Gabriel Magalhaes seeing an effort deflected wide before a goalmouth scramble failed to fall into the net and Bukayo Saka missed a sitter at the far post.

Gabriel Jesus made the breakthrough on 30 minutes after Granit Xhaka’s cross was deflected and spilled by Emiliano Martinez,

allowing the Brazilan striker to mop up the rebound.

Another near-miss came when Matty Cash hacked the ball off the line as Saka lurked, Martinez eventually grabbing Kieran Tierney’s effort.

The score remained stuck at 1-0 at the break after the goalkeeper produced a fine save to pluck a long-range Martinelli half-volley that was bound for the top corner.

Arsenal struggled to muster the same all-out energy for the second half but remained well on top,

Villa struggling to contain their forays forward let alone create their own pressure for a leveller.

Leon Bailey finally threatened after 73 minutes, Aaron Ramsdale tagging a shot over the bar.

It was therefore out of nowhere when Douglas Luiz’s first kick off the bench, a corner, was punted into touch by Granit Xhaka.

His second attempt was more impressive and flew over the heads of everyone to hit the net for an equaliser, VAR waving away Ramsdale’s

protests as the goalkeeper and Boubacar Kamara were equally guilty of wrestling in the melee.

Arsenal XI vs Aston Villa: Team News, Injury Latest, Possible Lineup

Arsenal could hand a first start of the season to Albert Sambi Lokonga against Aston Villa in the Premier League tonight.

The high-flying Gunners are light on midfield options as Oleksandr Zinchenko and Thomas Partey are still struggling for fitness and missed Saturday’s win over Fulham.

Mohamed Elneny is also out with a hamstring injury.

Partey is struggling with a thigh issue and Zinchenko has a knee problem, with Arsenal assessing both players this week.

Partey’s injury is similar to the one that forced him to miss the last six weeks of last season, although hopefully not as severe.

Zinchenko, meanwhile, was at Emirates Stadium on Saturday wearing a knee brace but there is some optimism he could be in the squad against Villa this evening.

Asked at the weekend if Partey or Zinchenko had a chance of playing against Villa,

Arteta said:

“I don’t think so. We still have to make another scan, especially on Thomas but I don’t think they will be available.

“Let’s see [if it is long or short term]. I cannot see yet.”

Asked if Partey’s injury was similar to last season, Arteta added: “Similar area, hopefully not as bad.”

Arsenal predicted XI (4-3-3):

White, Saliba, Gabriel, Tierney;

Odegaard, Lokonga, Xhaka;

Saka, Jesus, Martinelli

Arsenal squad :

Hein, Ramsdale, Turner; Bellerin, Cedric, Gabriel, Holding, Mari, Saliba, Tierney, Tomiyasu, White; Lokonga, Maitland-Niles, Odegaard, Saka, Smith Rowe, Vieira, Xhaka; Jesus, Martinelli, Marquinhos and Nketiah.

"A Drop Of Focus Is Unacceptable" Erik Ten Hag Reacts To Manchester United Draw

Manchester United new coach Erik ten Hag has reacted as his side letting a two-goal lead slip in their pre-season friendly with Aston Villa on Saturday.

Man Utd led 2-0 in Perth thanks to Jadon Sancho and a Matty Cash own goal.

But they were pegged back after half-time by Leon Bailey and then Calum Chambers equalised in stoppage time after easily winning a header from a corner.

Speaking to reporters after a match that was nearly postponed due to heavy rainfall, Ten Hag asserted that his side need to stop committing so many errors.

Ten Hag:

“Football is a sport of mistakes and we have to decrease the mistakes.”

“That’s clear but I have seen a lot of progress in these two weeks.

In the first half I saw really good football, really controlling and dominating the game but we have to learn from what happened in the second half.

“It’s not possible that you go 2-0 up and then throw it away.

That’s what I just said in the dressing room – a drop of focus is unacceptable but for the season [ahead] I’m happy because now I can tell them it cannot happen.”

“We have to get out of the dressing room [at half-time] and back in your plan and your focus and back to your performance and that is what we didn’t do.

“We had a lot of movement behind the defending line and scored two great goals so we were 2-0 up at half-time and then our focus dropped.

It can be that the guys are tired but that’s not an excuse.

They have to perform and it is what we didn’t do in the second half.

“It was the focus. I don’t want to make excuses about the pitch or weather. No matter what, we have to perform.”

Man Utd’s perfect pre-season record came to an end with Saturday’s draw.

The Red devil’s will now jet back to Europe ahead of their final two summer friendlies

against Atletico Madrid in Norway and Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford.

Manchester United were pegged back by a last-gasp Calum Chambers header as Aston Villa fought back to deny Erik ten Hag a winning end to their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

The final friendly of the Red Devils’ four-game trip had been in jeopardy due to the impact of heavy downpours on an already cut-up surface, but the referee gave the go-ahead following a pitch inspection.

Thankfully both sides appeared to avoid injury on the poor surface at the otherwise impressive Optus Stadium in Perth, where a crowd of 58,228 saw Steven Gerrard’s Villa overturn a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 at the death.

Jadon Sancho volleyed home his third goal of the tour at the end of a fine team move to open the scoring in a first half that ended with Marcus Rashford’s strike deflecting in off Matty Cash.

Leon Bailey pulled one back with a superb solo goal shortly after his half-time introduction and Chambers’ headed home his corner with the last touch of the night as David De Gea was caught in no-man’s land.

United captain Harry Maguire did not face any noticeable negativity days after being booed in Melbourne and went close to an early opener as Emiliano Martinez saved his header from a Luke Shaw corner.

Cash sent a fizzing strike just across the face of goal on a rare Villa voyage forwards, with United dominating play for the most part and the dangerous Sancho finding the net at the end of a fine team move.

United swept play from right to left and Rashford played in the overlapping Shaw, who crossed for Sancho to volley home on the edge of the six-yard box in the 25th minute.

The heavens opened as the second half came to a conclusion but Ten Hag’s men kept their composure in monsoon conditions to score again.

Fred took possession inside his own half and his clipped ball put Sancho behind Villa’s backline, with the winger crossing for Rashford to get away a strike that went in off Cash in the 42nd minute.

Villa returned strongly from the half-time break. Ollie Watkins went close shortly before substitute Bailey brilliantly darted forwards, cut inside Victor Lindelof and bent a low shot beyond De Gea.

The Spaniard produced an excellent save in the 54th minute to tip over a deflected attempt by Bailey, who was proving a handful and was denied a leveller by sliding Maguire’s block having rounded the goalkeeper.

De Gea misread the resulting corner but Villa did not punish him – a poor decision that may be down to the conditions given someone had to run onto the pitch to chase a plastic chair that had blown away soon after.

Both sides made sweeping changes as the match wound down on a worsening pitch, taking the sting out of a clash that ended with Chambers rising to meet a Bailey corner as De Gea was caught out.

Pre-Season: Manchester United Vs Aston Villa: Team News, H2H & Prediction

Manchester United will continue their pre-season tour of Australia in style when they face Aston Villa this weekend.

The Red devil’s Comfortable wins over Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace

have got the Erik ten Hag reign off to the perfect start and with less than three weeks to go until the Premier League season begins,

United will be keen to keep the good-feeling going.

Steven Gerrard’s Villa side have also had a successful time of it Down Under, beating Leeds and Brisbane Roar.

Both teams fly back to England after Saturday’s match to continue their preparations ahead of the serious business getting underway.

Manchester United vs Aston Villa team news

Ten Hag has gone strong with his lineup in all of United’s matches in Australia so far and the same can be expected against Villa.

Anthony Martial will surely get another chance to continue his goalscoring form in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford also likely to start again.

New signing Tyrell Malacia played more minutes than most against Palace so may be rested, with Luke Shaw and Alex Telles pushing for starts.

Raphael Varane missed out last match but United have insisted that was only precautionary, so he should return to the squad.

Villa are slightly more difficult to predict as they continue their pre-season preparations,

with Gerrard naming an almost entirely different side for the second-half against Brisbane Roar.

Tyrone Mings, Ollie Watkins and Jacob Ramsey came on for the second-half in that match, and there’s a strong start all three will be in from the off against United.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Manchester United wins: 102

Draws: 41

Aston Villa wins: 50

Manchester United vs Aston Villa prediction

It’s been a positive start for United under Ten Hag, with a fluid front-line in particular clicking into gear with 11 goals across three games in Australia so far.

Villa will likely name close to a full-strength side and can certainly trouble the United defence,

but the likes of Martial, Rashford and Sancho have looked sharp and should help maintain the winning record until the new manager.

Top5 Leagues: Premier League Clubs Have Already Spent Close To 500m Euros On Signings

Premier League teams have already spent 448.99 million euros on transfers, but the rest of the leagues are not able to match that amount.

No one can keep up with the English clubs who are flexing their financial muscle for yet another summer.

  • PREMIER LEAGUE: 448.49 million euros (37.11 percent)

  • SERIE A: 284.388 million euros (23.53 percent)

  • BUNDESLIGA: 218.68 million euros (18.09 percent)

  • LALIGA: 141.80 million euros (11.73 percent)

  • LIGUE 1: 115.15 million euros (9.52 percent)

TOTAL SPENDING: 1.208,508 million euros

Clubs from the top five leagues have invested 1.208 billion euros in signings, with the Premier League teams having spent 37.11 percent of this amount.

A total of 122 signings have been already made, with Serie A clubs spending 284.388m euros (23.53 per cent),

followed by Bundesliga teams (218.68m euros, 18.09 percent),

LaLiga Santander clubs (141.80m euros, 11.73 percent)

and Ligue 1 teams (115.15m euros, 9.52 per cent).

There is still time before the transfer window ends, but, for the times being, the Premier League has the upper hand.

At the current rate, English clubs could reach the 1.3 billion euros they spent last season on transfers.

The capital available to Premier League clubs is the result of their very evenly spread television rights income and a high percentage of millionaire owners with the ability to spend big.

Owners such as Leicester City’s Ayawatt Srivaddahanaprabba, Tottenham Hotspur’s Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy, Aston Villa’s Nassef Sawiris, Arsenal’s Stan Kroenke or Manchester City’s Mansour are making sure that there is certain capital invested in building their teams.

Six of the 10 most expensive signings have been made by Premier League clubs.

It’s Darwin Nunez’s move from Benfica to Liverpool for 75m euros, Erling Haaland from Dortmund to Manchester City for 60m euros,

Fabio Vieira from Porto to Arsenal for 35m euros, Nayef Aguerd from Rennes to West Ham,

also for 35m euros, Brenden Aaronson from Salzburg to Leeds United for 32.84m euros and Diego Carlos from Sevilla to Aston Villa for 31m euros.

Tchouameni’s signing

However, the most expensive signing so far has been made by Real Madrid, who brought in Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco for 80m euros.

The other three moves included in the list’s 10 most expensive signings are those of Federico Chiesa to Juventus for 40m euros,

Nuno Mendes to Paris Saint-Germain for 38m euros and Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich for 32m euros.

LaLiga would be at the bottom of the list had it not been for Tchouameni’s signing, as the rest of the Spanish teams have spent just 61.80m euros.

The Spanish league has established their own financial control system in their bid to

guarantee the sustainability of the competition and its own clubs by reviewing their financial situations.

Serie A spending rises

The rest of the leagues are also trailing the Premier League and only Serie A seems to be keeping pace.

In total, Italian clubs have spent 284.388 million euros, with Atalanta being the only Serie side making the top 10 of the list with the teams who have spent the most this summer.
