Guardiola: What Messi And Ronaldo Achieved Will Be Almost Impossible To Replicate

Former Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola, speaking ahead of his side’s clash with Paris Saint-Germain, has said that we may not see the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo again.

The two players, both now well into their thirties, continue to dominate at the top level.

They also have broken countless records and filled many trophy cabinets between them.

Obviously Guardiola knows Messi well, but on Wednesday he will be part of the opposition.

While this season he has also come up against Ronaldo once again.

At his pre-match press conference in the build-up to the game at the Etihad, the Catalan coach was asked if he expects to see such a duopoly again.

He replied:

“I don’t imagine [it will happen] as what these two guys have done will be almost impossible to imitate.”

“Maybe I will see it but I don’t think it’s going to happen – scoring this amount of goals, the amount of titles both had done.

“It is so difficult. I think it is unique in history to find two players like Cristiano and Messi do what they have done.”

Few people know Messi’s abilities as well as Guardiola, but that doesn’t mean he knows how to stop him, as he acknowledged.

“It’s so difficult and sometimes when he has the ball he doesn’t know what he’s going to do – so imagine you have to know what he is going to do.”

“I cannot tell the players what [Messi] will do, but hey, it happens with Neymar and [Kylian] Mbappe, with [Angel] Di Maria, with all the players up front in this team.

Every player could be a complete star in any team around the world and all four are in the same team.

“But I am still glad and happy that [Messi] is still playing, at the level he plays and with the quality, so it will be nice to face him.”

Manchester City take on Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad on Wendesday November 24 at 21:00 (CET).

'Unstoppable' Lionel Messi Ended A Run Of 264 Minutes Without A Goal For His New Club

The Argentina forward Lionel Messi scored his first club goal of his entire career that had not been scored for Barcelona after sealed a 2-0 victory for PSG Against Pep Guardiola sides.

That strike ended a run of 264 minutes without a goal for Messi since his summer move from Spain.

The last goal at club level was his final Barcelona game, a 2-1 defeat at Celta Vigo in May.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino celebrated with a sense of jubilation.

Guardiola had seen Messi at close quarters enough to know it was as good as inevitable.

Messi himself was left with a huge sense of relief.

Messi expressed his feelings after the match:

It’s true that I was getting desperate to score my first goal.”

“I hadn’t played much recently and I had only played once here at home but I am settling into the team little by little.

“The more us forwards play together, the better our relationship will be.

We all need to grow together and improve and keep giving our best.”

Former Barcelona legend had to Wait more than a month to play his first four games for his new club because of lack of fitness, international duty and then an injury.

He had failed to score in his first three fixtures for PSG.

Against Reims, Club Bruges and Lyon – after joining on a free transfer in the summer.

By his standards, that was a goal drought.

PSG boss Pochettino, Messi’s fellow Argentine, was delighted to see it ended.

Pochettino said:

Usually I don’t celebrate goals, I keep it to myself,” he said. “But today, for Messi, I did.

“I spent years watching Messi score goals from the opponent’s side – so this time, scoring for my team, that’s great.”

Lionel Messi glided forward from the halfway line late on against Manchester City at the Parc des Princes.

Played a one-two with Paris St-Germain team-mate Kylian Mbappe and left goalkeeper Ederson rooted to the spot with a shot beautifully placed into the top corner.

PSG’s much-hyped front three of Neymar, Mbappe and Messi.

The two most expensive players ever and the record six-time Ballon d’Or winner – showed some promising signs.

They played 44 passes between each other in total, almost 10% of PSG’s total.

Lionel Messi Is Close To Be Feature For Psg Against Pep Guardiola Sides In Champion League On Tuesday's

The former Barcelona Legend is yet to net for his new club despite been featured in three games.

He missed  their last two games through  knee injury he suffered against Lyon.

Messi has scored more Champions League goals against Guardiola than any other player.

Six goals in four meetings, including four goals in two games for Barcelona against City.

Mauricio Pochettino said:

He is in a very good way,”

“I think he will be in the squad but I haven’t decided on the starting XI.”

PSG have the option of playing a front three of the two most expensive players ever,

Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Messi, who has won a record six Ballons d’Or.

Guardiola views on messi:

“I think this kind of player speaks for itself, we’re fortunate to see him for 16 years as a pro,”

“What he’s done is more than exceptional and hopefully tomorrow he can play for the benefit of the game.”

“With this amount of quality I don’t know how to stop them,”

“They’re so good. This amount of talent makes it so difficult.

“You have to defend well without the ball and let them run when we have the ball.

They are exceptional players, individually and they combine so good.

“The three players up front can do whatever they want.

Wide narrow, wide left, Messi can play right or middle, Mbappe wide or middle.

They combine so well, the talent cannot be stopped.”

Both PSG and City have enjoyed most of their success since big-money takeovers in the 2000s.

Abu Dhabi United Group took over City in 2008, with Qatar Sports Investments running PSG since 2011.

Seven of PSG‘s nine league titles, and five of City’s seven, have come since those takeovers.

But the big goal – the Champions League – has evaded both sides, with both sides losing the last two finals.

Pochettino said:

“It’s a fact, not an opinion, that we are a team in construction,”

City have been under the best coach in the world in my opinion, with Pep Guardiola.

“It’s a matter of time but also, let’s face it, of investment.”

Guardiola said:

“What happened last season was last season, they were fantastic, it was tight and now they have Messi.

“Since Qatar took over they’ve been exceptional, huge competitors.”

City winger Riyad Mahrez agrees they cannot read too much into last season’s semi-final win, with the English side winning 2-1 away and then 2-0 at home.

“It is a different match,” he said.

“Last season was a semi-final with no fans. Today is six months later, beginning of the season and the group stage.

“It will be another tight game and we will have to be focused like we were last season.

We don’t think that because we won last season we will win again.”

Both sides come into the game in good form. PSG are top of Ligue 1 with eight wins out of eight.

While Manchester City beat title rivals Chelsea on Saturday.

However, PSG have not won in four Champions League games now after drawing with Club Bruges in their first group game.

City beat RB Leipzig 6-3 at home in their opener.

They are unbeaten in their last 10 away games in the Champions League.
